No AJ? No Thome? No problem.

It's too bad the Sox had to go to the bullpen today. John Danks has never pitched a complete nine-inning game as a professional, which may be a sign of the times in an era where managers have too much faith in pitch counts. It wouldhave been nice to see the third team shutout in four games, but seeing (more accurately, hearing) Bobby Jenks throw two pitches to get credit for a one-inning save has some novelty value.

The A's radio announcers were raving about Joe Crede all morning/afternoon.

Another solid pitching performace today, for the most part this season so far the pitching has been very solid. The Defense was amazing today, A Ram's play in CF was just sick, he even looked better with the bat today. Solid game, now on to Baltimore, very beatable team, let's take it to them!

This was a nice solid win. A little ninth-inning drama but giving our pitching giving up 3 runs in the past 4 games is pretty awesome.

I didn't actually see the game - did he get hurt? Because if the concern is just about TODAY, then I don't get it. He gave up 1 run and only 3 hits and 1 walk in 4.2 IP prior to today. I really think being concerned about him now is a bit over the top.

Well, sounds like Danks had a great game.

Linebrink just was not as sharp as normal but nothing to get our panties in a bunch over.. I prefer to celebrate Danks great outing and luxuriate in our defense and Big Bad Bobby's badness. 2 pitches..3 outs? get out.

As Danks said in the postgame..his goal is to make the best defense in the league work out there...and they did. He was effusive praising his defense as he should be. He acknowledged he still has to throw to contact more and reduce his pitch count.

Thank you, Carlos and Johnny and Joe and Alexi.

kittle42
04-15-2008, 04:51 PM
In Linebrink's outings where he has not looked all that sharp, they have both been after coming on in the 8th, then coming back out for the 9th. That's about the only thing I'd pay attention to, but I'm sure it's an anomoly, and in any event it's too early to tell much from it.

Keep this in mind

Linebrink gave up the run that does not score if Toby Hall wasn't a lazy sack o crap behind the dish and blocks the ball.

Hall gets a passed ball that lets the runner move up. If Hall blocks it, the flyout doesnt score a run and the DP by Jenks ends the game with the shut out.

Linebrink didn't look too good, but he didn't get much help either.

Danks you very much!
You read my mind with regards to my idea for a TBGR headline for this one!

Danks quelled the A's bats well into the 8th, much like Gavin did Detroit's Saturday. I did not expect Danks to get ahead of hitters so much. I have to give some credit for Crede in making a couple of beautiful plays to help Danks out as well, not giving up runs there.

It was a beautiful day out there; but, I truly hope Linebrink won't start a trend of allowing batters on base. Jenks made up for it by simply throwing a couple of pitches to nail this one down.

Great job, Sox!

BTW, I was at the game today and am curious as to what was going on near Section 159-160 in the top of the 9th inning. I saw one guy being escorted out by security guards who was displaying his Cubs jersey to everyone. Then, I saw someone throw beer at someone else, and it appeared as if one of the guys was gonna tumble over the LF rail (there was a fight or some commotion going on over there as well)! Security escorted another guy out, who apparently was another Cubs fan. Did anyone near that area get a better glimpse for what was going on? Just curious!

WHY? because there was a win? I'm not a small sample size results oriented person. For example, in poker, people make the wrong call all the time and win when 95% of the time they wouldnt. that does mean that decision was correct.

Having toby (and his slothlike play) be an automatic out, pablo not caring at 2nd base, and lexi swinging at EVERYTHING (why throw the guy a strike???) is not going to equal WIN WIN WIN. We got a tremendous outing outta Danks, great defense by Crede and Co. (even an awesome defensive play by Lexi... who woulda thought his DEFENSE would be whats been impressive?)

we wouldnt keep winning with a 7-8-9 rally kill like that.

I was hoping someone would mention the defense. It was GREAT today. That play Ramirez made to throw out Brown in the second was absolutely sick. Who else in the AL can make that play? Ichiro, and that's about it. The play by Crede was also awesome, as good as it gets by a third baseman, a nice pick by Swish to finish it.

In addition to those two great plays, there were several other good ones as well.

More exactly, bench players, especially backup catchers, should never get a base hit or take a pitch, nor should they try on defense. (this is mostly 8 & 9 today, Lexi gets a pass for his defense today.. prolly saved some runs.)

Os and then the Rays. No reason we can't come out of that with a 3-2 record or better...I know both of those teams have played decent ball so far, but 3-2 or better is certainly doable. 11-7 would be a nice start to the season.

I don't think Ozzie should throw him in the 9th anymore...

I agreed with the move of keeping him in. He threw like 2 pitches in the 8th, and no reason to bring Bobby in the 9th for a 4-0 game. Walking the leadoff hitter sucks all day every day, but Linebrink did his job in the 8th, and that was way more important than the 2 batters he let on in the 9th.

I think the fact that the Twins play in a dome and they had our number was much more significant on our dome stats than our ability to play in a dome. What other Domes are there in the AL?

Tampa, Minny, Toronto...That's it - right? Safeco has a retractable roof - but it isn't a pure dome.

Really - people are digging for reasons to be negative if they predict us struggling against Tampa BECAUSE of the dome. We may struggle there - but it will have more to do with the calibre of play on the field than the type of building. This team can play just fine in a dome stadium.

I'd agree. It wasn't a save situation to start the ninth. You hope Linebrink gets through it and Jenks gets the day off. But Linebrink ran into a bit of trouble, so you gotta go to Jenks.

Yeah - both can be...I agree. But we have the type of team that can HIT against anyone. We have a solid 5 man rotation and we play strong defense. If we go out there and play our game, 3-2 is easily reachable.

I'll say this....Danks was terrible against Minnesota, but the Twinks were hitting little dribblers and gork shots all over the place. He had to be frustrated. I think any pitcher would start to press when that crap happens.
Anyway, he's been solid 2 of 3 starts, and that's all we can ask for.

I'm still pissed that he couldn't get a CG shutout on his birthday, but Ozzie loves pulling his guys while their confidence is peaked.

Plus, with a 4 run lead, there's no need to waste his arm in a game we're more than likely going to win by having him finish the 8th and/or try to go into the 9th and throw another 20 something pitches.

This win today shows me what we have in Danks. If he goes out and pitches to contact, jumps on hitters, and attacks the strike zone, we see a lot of games like this one. If he nibbles, doesn't trust his stuff, or falls behind, we see the game against the Twinkies. Great effort today and have a good one tonight.

I'm telling you, Alexei is raw as all hell, but just from some of the raw tools he's displaying, I'll bet he's just going to keep getting better. Likely should be in AAA, but still, you can't deny the talent is there.

I was at the game today...Ramirez's throw was the best I have ever witnessed in person. It completely stunned the crowd...there was a 2-3 second delay while everyone processed what happened...then the crowd started cheering. It wasn't just the throw, it was scooping the ball up on a dead run, then pivoting at full speed and making a perfect throw. His double missed being a HR by about half a foot.

The kid is raw....but he has IT. He's going to be a great player.

Were you anywhere near Section 160 to see what was going on over there in the 9th inning?

We may see some flashes of brilliances from Ramirez; but, I still think he should spend some time in AAA when Owens is back to refine his hitting.

Danks said after the game that he did not have his good stuff today and I agree with him. That is what is really encouraging about his outing. He battled and found a groove later on and pushed thru. His defense saved his butt also. That is the way it is supposed to work in these types of games.

Were you anywhere near Section 160 to see what was going on over there in the 9th inning?

I agree he needs time at AAA, and playing every day....get a more controlled swing, improve his ability to hit breaking stuff, and work on his overall defense. But the raw talent is already coming through, and I just really like his overall demeanor...he just seems to love the game, and doesn't seem the least bit overwhelmed in his first two weeks in the majors.

I was up on the fan deck for the last two innings, had a perfect view of the chicanery in the left field bleachers. Two Cubs fans in their full "gear" mouthing off to all the WSox fans, beers are thrown, some Cub fan who probably ways 100 pounds soaking wet, starts taking off his coat so he can "get it on" with someone twice as big as him (but slowly enough so that security would get there before anything really happened). Security boots both of them. Classic.

The second one that got booted literally was picked up off his feet by a massive black security guard. Hilarious.

From the minute they arrived they were looking for trouble. We watched the whole situation degress inning by inning.
