For anyone that was at the game today something bothered me, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. The trivia question in the 4th inning on the scoreboard asked 'Who was the White Sox third baseman for the home opener in 2000?" The options were 'Greg Norton' 'Paul Konerko' and 'Carlos Lee'.....and the scoreboard listed the answer as Paul Konerko. Now maybe I read it wrong, or maybe I am wrong, but I don't ever remember Paulie being the opening day third baseman. Somebody help me out.

It was Konerko. Norton was at first.

Konerko spent a lot of time at 3B in the minors, IIRC, and might have been a 3B when he was drafted out of Chaparral H.S.

Fun fact, Konerko went to the same high school as Kyle Williams, KW's son.

I thought he was drafted as a catcher, he really moved all over the place until coming to the Sox and to his credit worked his ass off at becoming a better fielder.

He was a catcher in the Dodgers farm system but some guy named Mike Piazza was blocking him from making it to the show. He was then converted to a 3B/1B.

Yep, they were talking about PK's catcher experience during the Saturday Fox broadcast. Mike Scioscia recommended Paulie convert to 3B/1B to get more ABs and to speed along his offensive progression.

Sciosca told him he could keep catching and head back to single A or move to a base and go to to AA immediately and Paulie tossed his catcher's mitt in the garbage

During one of Joe Crede's slumps in early 2005, there was talk at WSI of moving Konerko to third.

I remember that game very well, Ray Durham went back on a ball into RF, great play. Crowd was electric for the first time in a very long time. Just something different in the air that night you could tell it was going to be a fun season.

The best thing about this is looking at Konerko's defensive positions back in 97-98 and seeing he played about 20 or so games in LF. That'd be a sight to see.

Are you insane? Go watch some other 1B try to pick half the stuff Paulie does. He may not be quick, he may not have the range of some 1B, but he is a picking machine.
