So far its been as many people said...the pitching will tell all for this team. They've had 4 decent/good outings from the starters, and 2 crappy ones. They're 4-2. If Floyd and Danks can hold up over the entire season and pitch well, they can have a good year as a team.

Everybody looked great. I hope Ozzie takes a look at what McDougal did tonight and never try and have him pitch two again.

He didn't do anything wrong. If anything, it was a good thing to see him get a bases loaded inning-ending double play.

Plus, there's no need to use another reliever in a 11-run blowout.

Now, we can say we can't use Mac for a week or so because he pitched 2 innings instead of 1

This team is a lot of fun to watch. Carlos Quentin is a man possessed.Yes, but what about that dropped fly ball?

Not to get carried away, but closing out the sweep is something they've had a LOT of trouble doing in the past couple of years, even when they were playing well. Great to see MB and crew take care of business.

Can't wait to see Javy pitch tomorrow -- how we do against the Twins is always a good measuring point. The Tigers are so dumbfounded, today didn't even seem like a fair fight. :gulp:

4-2 opening the season (on the road) against Cleveland and Detroit. I'll take that any day.

I think we've finally got a steady outfield for the first time since '05. And, unconventional as he may appear, I think we've found a leadoff hitter.

All in all, they look pretty good so far. Hope it stays that way.

One thing, MacDougal needs to go.

Tonight was the first time I've seen Quentin. He's confident and swings as hard at the ball as anyone. Impressive.

MacDougal and a Bukvich event tonight - pitched like garb, but 0 runs on his slate. I'd like to get his stats looking deceptively good and unload him in July.

I know it's only 2 ABs, but geeze, Anderson, when Uribe's stinging this guy for a double, don't K with pitches at your heels.

They're still not ready to say the Sox are a contender, but things are looking like that might change as well.

And he's a good baserunner too. Awesome job beating that throw to 2nd.

I just want to point out (before people say they don't look any different on the basepaths) that this is one of the things that was worked on in Spring Training. Also, Crede getting a good jump off a passed ball by I-Roid (which was not that far away from him).

I love how opportunistic they were tonight. Also, I like the way the offense is going thus far. I know people will hate me saying this, but in a way, it reminds of 2005 and early 2006. They stick around in counts, their pitching keeps them in it, and then when the opposing pitcher gets fatigued, they really start to bring it.

I really like his arm strength at 2nd base. Today they were saying that SS was the hardest position to play in the infield and that if you could play there you can play anywhere. Then Uribe made a strong throw to first on an ensuing play and they pointed that play out as a prime example.

To be honest, I can see why ESPN did that. The Tiggers were (and still are) the only team not to get a win yet. Considering they went to the World Series less than a year and a half ago; and were the odds on favorite to win the division outright? Yeah, ESPN was going to be Tiger centric until the game went in favor of the Sox.

Let's hope those bats still have a bit of thunder in them for tomorrow.

That Twins pen is pretty damn good and Carlos Gomez is VERY exciting. That said, their rotation doesn't look like it is built for 162.

I still think they are the 4th best team in the division at best.

Coming home 4-2 is awesome. I'm so pumped up for tomorrow!

I know its early, but the way the Fox team was talking about the Tigers, it sounded a lot like the Sox last year. Both announcers were saying stuff like "they aren't this bad. just wait till the real line up is on the field." etc. Just keep playing like this until June Kitties, that should be enough to bury you...:D:

Well, keep in mind that Richar is a converted SS. He has a strong arm (though I don't think it is as strong as Uribe's). Even when Uribe is replaced, we will still have someone with those capabilities at 2nd.

Great all around game. We knocked Verlander around, got to their BP, and kicked the Tigers while they were down. Buehrle looked really good, too. I can't remember the last time I saw a team commit three errors and win by 11.

Also, does anyone know the official rule on Buehrle's wild pitch in the 7th? For those who didn't see, a runner was on third, and the pitch drilled the umpire in the head, bouncing off his mask and rolling far away. The ump fell down and the runner walked home for a run. I thought that since the ball hit the ump in foul territory, it would be a deal ball and the runner couldn't advance.

I've always thought the umpire is in play.

Besides, it was AJ/Buehrle's fault.

I love Carlos Quentin. You can just tell the guy is ready to bust out, he looks so comfortable up there. I'll admit that going into the season I was all for Anderson starting more often than not, but I'm not complaining at all with what Quentin is doing. Swisher seems like he's handling center field just fine. BA did not look comfortable at the plate, but who can blame him in his first at-bats all week.

It's also encouraging to see Dye get off to a hot start. I was worried that last year was the beginning of his decline. Yeah it's early, but it's nice to see him producing like '06.

Joe Morgan's praise of Uribe's defense and arm tonight against Detroit are probably the most astute and complimentary words from any ESPN announcer about a Sox player since 2005. It's about time.

JB98
04-07-2008, 01:43 AM
One positive that hasn't been mentioned yet in the thread: A HUGE hit from Orlando Cabrera, who had been struggling at the plate.

0-2 count, two outs, bases loaded, and he lines one in the gap to clear them off. That took it from a 6-1 game to a 9-1 game and essentially sealed the deal for the Sox tonight.

You have to like the way this team is playing if they are still hitting fantastically with OC struggling, if he can turn it on and some of these guys can continue playing at or near this level... we'll be a VERY fine team.

Another key play in the game was the gun down at third. Tigers had just tied the game at one and santiago tried to stretch a double into a triple. JD throws to Uribe who fires to Crede well ahead of the runner turning what would have been man on 2nd with no out to bases empty and one out.

I know you're knocking Lip, but did the '70 team really start out 4-2??

No. The '70 Sox were 1-5 over their first six games. Actually the closest they ever got to .500 was 0-1 after opening day. :(:

Aside from the two crede throws that were off the mark, the defense was very sound...ive never been so confident of a ground ball turning into a double play when hit to the left side, you know uribe is gonna turn it...great effort from buehrle who needed the rebound

oh man, I haven't spent a lot of time here the past few years, but good to see Lip is still Lip.

All I can say is it's nice to see this team come out and play this way. Of course we all know 4-2 is just six games out of 162, and the AL is a brutal league, but this will be one heck of a fun summer if this team can bring this style every night. My post '05 attitude is to just enjoy them as they come, and this was a fun weekend to watch the boys play ball - two national HD games to boot!

They lost opening day 12-0 and, to go 1-5, lost a doubleheader the first Sunday of the season -- to the expansion Milwaukee Brewers, who lost their opener 12-0 and were winless before winning the last three games of their four-game series at Comiskey. The Brewers beat the Sox 16-2 in the doubleheader nightcap.

People who didn't have to suffer through it should be careful when comparing teams to the 1970 White Sox.

One positive that hasn't been mentioned yet in the thread: A HUGE hit from Orlando Cabrera, who had been struggling at the plate.

0-2 count, two outs, bases loaded, and he lines one in the gap to clear them off. That took it from a 6-1 game to a 9-1 game and essentially sealed the deal for the Sox tonight.
hopefully that will jumpstart him to start hitting, cause he is a huge part of the whitesox success.

Nice game last night on all fronts! Hopefully, ESPN will put them on more often after that showing...I still hate that I can't watch them play too often down here...
Tigger fans are melting down on the Michigan State messageboards...pretty funny stuff after all that money they spent....:D:

Folks:

I remember the '70 club started off 4-2. That year didn't quite pan out as we'd hoped.

Who cares?

Right now, the Sox are on a winning streak, they're opening at home in 8 hours, and we're having fun.

I'll worry when the Sox have a losing record. But when they're winning, I'm just going to enjoy the ride!!!

I love the plate discipline, more than anything this past week. They're seeing a lot more pitches than even the '05 team, just by eyesight. If the starters can throw well, I think we got as good a shot as anyone. It'll be rocking today at the park.

It's a good sign when you're off to a 4-2 start, 4 game winning streak while your #2-#4 hitters ar hitting: .174, ,167, and .200.

It's also a good sign that the talent level on this team is such that we don't really have room for guys like Owens, Wassermann, Richar right now...which means we've drastically increased our depth..and we have some decent insurance against injuries.

It's another good sign that the Tigers didn't have a very good bullpen last year and it's even worse this year along with a starting rotation that is not very deep. They can start hitting all they want...but their pitching staff is a real achilles heal. Dave "poofy hair/red turtleneck" Dombrowski...maybe all that effort to pick up more hitting should have been directed towards the bullpen. If you're counting on Willis and Grilli...you're in trouble.

One more thing: mods is there any way to delete all my posts ranting that the starting outfield should be Swisher/Anderson/Dye?

Okay odd question here. What was Swisher looking at during his at bats last night? I kept noticing when they had the close up of him, his eyes were looking up, like he was checking himself out on the jumbo tron. Anyone else catch this or am I enjoying HD way too much?

Here's to Big V bringing home the win today. That K to Walk ratio needs to widen!

I wouldn't say there's no room for Wassermann. MacDougal couldn't even throw strikes with an 11-run lead.

We're deep at some positions (obviously 2B, OF), but razor-thin in others. Especially the most important position (starting pitching), as well as bullpen (Wasserman is the only guy I'd be comfortable with calling up). It's a gamble, but if the starters hold up, I like the way the team is constructed.

It's not out of the ordinary for a pitcher to not be as focused in a blowout game. I was impressed with the way he pitched out of it. If Quentin catches that fly ball (another example of losing focus), MacDougal isn't even an issue today.

Agreed. We had to have someone warming up with an 11 run lead. That speaks volumes right there.

Except that this wasn't, for example, Bobby coming in with an 11-run lead...it was MacDougal. He can't throw a strike when it's close, and obviously can't do it when it's a blowout, either. He's got serious issues. Throw the ball down the middle, let them crush it, and hopefully it's right at somebody.

And MacDougal wasn't an 'issue,' because we were up by 11 runs. I still thought he looked awful in the 8th (is it illegal to throw two strikes in a row?)...luckily we were up by a lot.

It wasn't obvious to me. Every time the Sox start the season at 4-2, the 1970 season rears its ugly head.

Based on how Mac has pitched for the last year...there should be no such thing as a "blow out game" in his world. If that were the case...his "lack of focus" caused the manager to get a guy up in the bullpen (Masset) in the 9th inning of a blow out....not good.

The time will come for a losing streak. All teams go through them. It's good to see a strong start.
