Even though it's only Spring Training he's been beyond awful. Just noticed that he got shellacked by the Pirates today putting his totals to:

16.2 IP, 25 H, 16 ER, 15 BB, 12 K

The walks are what stand out to me.

Looks good to me. Hopefully Floyd will beat him twice in the first two weeks.

Obviously as a Tigers fans, its disappointing to see Willis do this bad. Its the fact he's gotten rocked every start, and not one or two times thats disappointing. But this happens all the time. Pitchers having a terrible spring only to come out firing and doing great in the regular season. Verlander in 2007 didn't have that good of a spring, and he ended up an All-Star and Cy Young contender.

Didn't Willis perform fair last year against the weak NL? I don't recall his exact numbers last year and I am too lazy to look them up. But shouldn't that translate to him getting lit up by the stronger AL?

I agree, ST stats are very unreliable as a whole. Sometimes you have kids who end up in A ball behind you missing routine plays, thus inflating your H/9, ERA, WHIP, etc. The thing that raises a big red flag for me is the walks. Dontrelle's control has been steadily worsening over the last 3 years. If it's an issue again, he's going to get murdered in the AL.

He posted a 4.91 ERA in 4 interleague starts last year, and a 5.17 ERA overall.

In his 1 start againg the Sox...1 IP, 3H, 3BB, 0K, 4ER

Mind you, Ryan Bukvich blew the save as the Marlins went on to win 7-5.

I was glad he was packaged with Cabrera... Helps to offset some of the damage Miguel can do in my mind... I can't believe Detroit signed him to an extension without even seeing how he fares in a much tougher league after the abysmal seasons he's accumulated since '05.

The D-Train will be a D-saster for D-Troit.

It IS only ST, but the fact that he had a five something ERA last year in the relatively weak hitting NL and the fact taht he's getting rocked now is cause for concern.

It's spring training.

That's true, but as rdivaldi mentioned, the walks stand out. I can see getting lit up, and that not translating to the regular season, but walks are never a good sign.

Better question is: Is anybody surprised?

I never quite understood all of this excitement over Willis. His ERA has been going up in the NL the last two years to 5.17 last year. My only guess would be that maybe the thinking is that he just had an off year last year.

Who knows how he'll do in the reg season but I don't think he'll fare to well in the AL.
