What have the A's and Red Sox been doing before they play Tuesday? Are they playing exhibitions with Japanese teams?

I wonder how long it will take for them to have 'world championships', can see it now, winning the World Series will still be a great feat, but the real focus will be defeating the rest of the world. Major baseball leagues in the country lining up their playoffs at the same time, and then duking it out in a mini tournament for one winner. More games which will get a lot of attention = more money for everyone involved.

If you cut a few games from the schedule, the wear and tear aspect won't be as bad (won't happen, and they won't remove the interleague factor for the $$, but I'd love to see them remove it and just have a schedule where everyone plays each team in their league 8 times- 4 home, 4 away)

Or maybe too much wine today

That really is a great idea, but the MLBPA won't allow it. You could potentially have something like, the World Series Champion winds up playing the champion from the Japanese Leagues, then the Cuban leagues, or some sort of tournament like that, but it would take awhile to grow and would probably be boring at first (and likely killed off after a couple of years). It'd be kinda like the WBC which I think is a great idea and if given the time to grow could become real big later on (though it would need to work out some of the kinks). People forget that the idea of having the NL champ play the AL champ was scorned when it first came about, but the owners saw a chance to make more money and leaped for it. In today's game however, you'd need to give the players a big cut seeing as how I doubt they'd play just for pride anymore.

Given the international rosters in MLB these day's "World Champion" isn't that much of a misnomer.

So far, so good as interesting scenes abound (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2008/03/24/so_far_so_good_as_interesting_scenes_abound/)

he talks about something we all saw yesterday....the national high school tournament is going on and yesterday a CF dropped an easy fly ball that cost his team the game. What happened next was sad to watch...

I don't think it's so crazy, if you're not just going to see the Red Sox/their opening day. Like, if you wanted to do something different like see Japan, and use the Red Sox as your excuse to put the wheels in motion, then I say more power to you. This is how I may visit LA this year. Or maybe a Sox or Bulls game as an excuse for wanting to go visit a place like Toronto or Seattle, which I've wanted to see.

The MLB and ESPN really need to stop it, it helps nobody. You've basically created a system where casual fans only care about 2 teams, not about your league. That can't happen. If the As (obviously they won't, but IF), they were to make it to the World Series you've pretty much rendered them as worthless.

You've blatantly said through this series that this is about the Red Sox, then MLB, then the As. From a business standpoint... you can't do that, especially with a divided TV audience.

I was really hoping the As would pull through... Emil Brown once a Royal, always a Royal.

Ask the NBA what happens when you get an audience that only cares about one tiny part of your league. How's the ratings since MJ retired?

Exactly. They always thought they would have the Knicks and Pacers to fall back on and it didn't happen, they are just now recovering while the Laker did help though.

But never, ever, ever focus your league on one-team or one-person. As much as I hate the NFL they got it right... if Tom Brady and Peyton Manning go out in the same game with career-ending injuries, the NFL itself doesn't miss a beat.

Had Cleveland beat Boston in the ALCS last year, they probably would have had a ratings nightmare with a Rockies-Indians WS, although the more dedicated fans would be more interested in that match up than watching Boston again. IIRC the 05 and 06 WS match ups also got low ratings because of the lack of "star power" teams, but I thought they were great match ups.

Even the recovery is not even close to their heyday. The 1998 NBA Finals (Bulls vs. Jazz) drew an average rating of 18.7. The last game of the series had an estimated 72 million viewers. Since then the ratings for the finals have only cracked double digits half the time, and only once in the last 5 years. Last year the finals had a 6.2 rating.

But don't worry ESPN and Fox, I'm sure that things will be different with the Red Sox/Yankees/Cubs endless circle jerk you perpetuate.

2007 wasn't any better. Even with the beloved Red Sox and the all-encompassing Red Sox Nation, the total viewership for the 4 games of the series was almost exactly the same as the 2005 World Series. But you don't hear anyone talking about how no one cares about the Red Sox.
