View Full Version : Will Paul Phillips pull a Widger?

Phillips is still in camp because of one reason, Toby Hall is bad. I know he's been hurt, but I don't think he's 100%. He can't throw and he can't hit. In 2005, I can't remember who the Sox had in camp. But Widger kept hanging around, hanging around, and won the job. This has the same feel to me. Hall has a great attitude, but I think he'll be left behind. Thoughts?

I certainly hope Phillips makes the team over Hall. I hope KW can find someone to take Hall's contract of the Sox' hands.

Uh oh, watch out for that Scott guy that loves Hall. We had quite a thread going on Mr. Hall's limitations earlier in the week and it ended up in the roadhouse.

All I have to say, is Toby Hall has turned out to be worthless. The guy has has been rehabbing a separated shoulder for over a year now? Come on.

Dump him and at least have a backup catcher that can play some defense. If Phillips can do that, I say lets go with it.

Ben Davis got hurt in the spring and pretty much sat out the entire seson. Jamie Burke was also there and had one at-bat with the Sox in '05.

Hall with another terrible game and Phillips comes in, and poof, Cub caught stealing

I don't believe Hall has a hit, yet. That kinda sucks.

Phillips is even smart when he's not behind the plate. Yesterday, ground ball to his right, and tried to field it cleanly and he takes it off the face instead of risking his season by diving for the ball like SOMEBODY I know...

Well, he has only played in a couple of games.

I thought this guy was supposed to be healthy, it appears not. I'd rather have an arm behind homeplate and Hall doesn't have one at all.

RBI double for Phillips in the 10th today. I hope he makes it.

You're right, he's only had 11 AB's including today's.

I don't think Hall should make this team. It's unfortunate cuz I really liked it when we signed him, but he's obviously not healthy and isn't the same guy he was with Tampa. I don't know a whole lot about Phillips, but at least he can throw guys out...I think this is the last year of Toby's contract, I'd let him walk. If it isn't his last year, I'd tell him to have that surgery he opted not to have in '07 (and I don't blame him, he tried to come back when we were still in the middle of the race, but he should have shut himself down once it was clear we weren't going anywhere) and hope that at least makes for a good '09.

It's worth noting that Carlos Vasquez's departure leaves a spot on the 40 man open. Maybe the Sox were expecting this? I can't imagine them going to Lucy or Armstrong yet.

I hope Toby is healthy enough to make the team. If not, he shouldn't make the team.

I say give it to Phillips. Why not? I know veteran players have to be given a preference because they're established in a way, but Hall seems to be past 'veteran' at this point. He's obviously not healthy enough to be even a backup catcher. It's either Phillips, or...

Hall is awful and I will be very dissapointed in Ozzie/KW if he isn't on the DL or in TripleA to start this season.

Phillips has definitely been superior to Hall this spring.

I'm not concerned about offense from a backup catcher. You need a guy who can catch and throw. From what I've seen Phillips is better than Hall in that area at this point.

I have to agree and I've been waiting for this topic to come up this Spring Training. Toby Hall has looked awful both offensively and defensively this Spring during the TV broadcasts I've seen. Not to mention that he looks like he has put on a little weight in the offseason to boot. I also keep hearing that he is STILL rehabbing that shoulder??!!:?: I think Kenny Williams took a bath on the Toby Hall contract and I hope that he is smart enough to realize it. Since the shoulder injury, Toby obviously is not the player KW thought he was getting. All you need out of a good backup catcher is solid defense. It really makes me appreciate what we had in Mark Johnson a number of years ago. He had a good eye at the plate, could throw runners out, and called a good game. Of course, he couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag but it didn't matter because he did everything else well. Perhaps Phillips could be our new Mark Johnson?

Looks like there was a blog post about a second Hall meeting that was pulled:
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/03/hall-update.html

It's back now. It's about Hall assuring White Sox brass that he's healthy. If he's healthy, then he's really got nothing going for him baseball-wise.

Ahh...

That makes a little more sense than the artile that said he had a meeting with KW and Ozzie and then went back to work out with his teammates.

I gotta agree. Despite his excellent years in TB, this guy has been completely useless in a Sox uniform. He hasn't shown that he can play this Spring either. Oh well, I guess AJ will have to play 162 games, so we can pay this crippled fatboy to sit on the bench.

If Hall can't produce in the first month or two I suspect he will be gone. The Sox aren't going to spend another year with no one competent at backup C.

Totally agree. Phillips is just a better player than Hall at this point.
