View Full Version : When Are First Cuts?

Lip Man 1

Does anyone know when the Sox first spring cuts will be announced?

I'd imagine four or five pitchers will be on the list and I'm just looking for when that will be.

Before Wednesday's game.
The timing can't be any worse, as the Sox will make their first round of cuts before Wednesday's game. The Sox will likely make 10 cuts and trim their spring training roster to 40.

Angels in the Outfield is pretty factually incorrect. They keep saying that the Angels win the pennant after they beat the Sox in that "last game of the season." Obviously they'd have to play the ALCS first. I would expect nothing better from Hollywood.

Only minor surprise in there is Haeger. I thought he might be given a little bit more of a chance to break with the club as one of the last one or two spots in the bullpen.

Any insight on whether the Sox are still considering carrying 12 pitchers?

Yeah, I think the plan is to carry 7 in the pen.

That's what I thought, which makes it even more surprising. At most, only 6 spots in the bullpen have been locked up: Dotel, Jenks, Linebrink, MacDougal, Thornton, and Wasserman. Haeger seems like he could have been given the chance to duke it out with Masset, Sisco, and Logan for that last spot. I don't want either of those three guys in the pen.

I think Sisco has very little chance of making the team.

I would put Logan in the "lock" category now, with Masset and Wassermann going for the last spot. Masset probably has the edge now since he's out of options, and is considered a long reliever.

Personally, I think Masset sucks and will eventually be traded. Wassermann should be on the team.

Forgot Masset was out of options. That changes things.

Is Logan out of options? If not, he should be in the minors. If so, the Sox should consider hoping he clears waivers. He just does not belong in the major leagues and Wasserman has showed that he can cut it at the big league level.

Masset should eventually be traded to the Pirates and the Devil Rays of the world. For now, if he's out of options, he can be used in mop-up situations where we need a relief pitcher for 2-3 innings.

According to this article, Ohka has a spot locked up.

Cooper rattled off Mark Buehrle, Javier Vazquez, John Danks, Matt Thornton, Tomo Ohka, Scott Linebrink, Octavio Dotel, Bobby Jenks and a handful of names who have a ticket to Chicago assured. They've done well.

MacDougal is a lock to make the team? Thought he had an option left and he's looked like crap so far this spring. Don't mind Ohka making the team as a reliever. It's where he's excelled in the past and having a guy who can go long or short is a great option. Linebrink, Dotel, Thornton and Jenks are the big 4 in late inning situation. The other 3 are to fill in the gaps and allow Ozzie some flexibility to not burn out starter arms early in the year. Having two guys who can pitch more than one inning is probably a good idea.

Scene: Jake Taylor, Vaughn and Willie Mays Hays are at dinner. Jake is looking down the balcony at a female:

Willie: "Does she know that?"
Jake: "Who's that guy she's with?"
Willie: "I don't know, He's not wearing a name tag."

Vaughn then takes a swig of his beer and shakes his head no.

In an article linked on the third page of this thread, Cooper said that Ohka was a lock to break camp with the team. I was a little incredulous about it at the time, but why the hell would you sign a guy like Ohka if he doesn't make the team pitching 10 spring innings with a sub-1.00 ERA? I'll go out on a limb and say that, this spring, Ohka has been more impressive than any other reliever in camp.

If he were a young guy, I'd say send him down and get him some starts. But he's not. He can handle coming out of the pen and then stepping into a spot starters role when necessary. If I were Ohka, I'd be pretty pissed about this.

Ohka probably signed with the Sox knowing he'd be going to Charlotte as a starting pitcher. He needs to go to minor league camp now to get stretched out before their season begins.

It's down to one spot for Masset, Wassermann, and DJ Carrasco. Barring a trade, it'll be Masset.

I agree completely but the Sox seem married to the idea of having two lefties in the bullpen and Logan is unforunately the best we have. I'd feel a hell of a lot better with Ohka taking the ball in a close game over Boone. He is prone to meltdowns and absolutely worthless against right handed batters.

Sox 70:

Based on the way Masset has looked this spring, he should be dropped in a heartbeat.

Personally I'd give the last two spots to Wasserman and Carrasco.

They are getting people out, even in the light air of Arizona, unlike Masset and Logan.

The White Sox better not make this decision because Masset is out of options, if he's junk, he's junk and you don't need that on a suspect staff the way it is.
