What is this guy's role in the organization? The only reason I ask is that he has 26 at bats this spring, second only to Brian Anderson, for whom there is a very good reason to give plenty of at bats. He's also got a couple stolen bases and a very good K/AB ratio. He also made a damn good diving catch in right field against the Rangers last Thursday. He's 24 and was signed to a minor league contract over the winter.

Why is this guy getting so many at bats? Are the Sox hoping to sweeten a Crede deal with someone who they're trying to sell as a guy ready for the major leagues to a team with a shortage of outfielders?

Edit: The same basic question could also be asked about Bourgeois.

I assumed he was headed for Charlotte.

His minor league numbers are real bad

The only stat I'm asking about is the number of at bats he's getting. The other information is just for a frame of reference.

Owens and Quentin have been shelved up until this morning's B game.

Ozzie doesn't want to play Ozuna in the outfield anymore.

Anderson, Swisher and Dye have been playing.

Negron is the only non-roster invite outfielder.

I know Ozzie has said that he does't want to use Pablo in the OF, but it seems like he's going to be the emergency/5th outfielder anyway.

I assume the outfield depth chart is something like

Dye
Swisher
Owens* (Joey Cora was talking him up as the CF/leadoff man the other day)
Quentin*
Anderson
Ramirez
Bourgeois
Negron
Pablo (emergency/spot use during injury until they bring someone else up).

* injured
bold = on 25-man roster if healthy

Not saying that I agree with this depth chart (I don't), but that seems to be the way they're talking.

Well...that's probably a pretty good explanation of the situation.

I thought I heard Hawk say that Negron was a former #1 draft pick with the Blue Jays.
He is

He's also been real bad.
