Hey, hey!
WGN, Cubs mark 60-year love affair (http://www.suntimes.com/business/feder/818762,CST-FIN-feder29.article)

Maybe they'll throw in some fake simulated championships and hope everyone is too high to notice

Well they would show clips of their last championship except TV hadn't been invented yet

from the article:
Bob Vorwald, director of production at WGN: "With TBS doing a national game of the week (starting this year): the Cubs are the only team left on a superstation."

Yep, the Cubs are the only team left that broadcasts games on a superstation. TBS won't be carrying the Braves and WGN doesn't telecast any other teams. Hey - trust him - he's the director of production at WGN, I think he'd know if they telecast any other teams.

Unfortunatly none of us can undo the damage that being on Channel 32, Channel 44 and On TV did to our personna.

Sadly in 1967 WGN-TV elected to do Cubs road games and forced the White Sox to become nomads. But then to be fair there was nothing heavy handed about it. The Cubs had a decades long relationship with WGN radio so it was an easy choice for the Trib.

Of course the reason that unlike NY and LA there were no other VHF channels to turn to was Tribune being able to influence the FCC. and Channel 9 was it.

The White Sox compounded the problem by being on WCFL. the station could be heard in Maine at night but not Rockford or Peoria. That is an often overlooked factor in why the Sox were primarily a city team and into Indiana but not downstate or to the west into Iowa.

I think WGN should pretty much be avoided the other 365 days of the year as well.

Actually watching may have 2 benefits:

It would provide a lot of laughs.
It might help us to better understand our sick Cubs fans brothers.

WGN was doing some selected Sox road games for years before 1967. That wasn't the complete reason. Part of it was because the Sox were tired of having a number of their games on Saturday's which wasn't the best draw while the Cubs got the better Sunday slot.

WGN-TV in the end was going to promote the product their radio station had.

Was there ever a time in the 50's when the White Sox were much better that WGN radio might have gone with the Sox instead?

WCFL is many ways is responsible for the team not developing a following outside of Chicago after WW2. By the time they had moved to WMAQ loyalties had been formed.

All WGN is good for is reruns of reruns of "America's Funniest Home Videos". The same crap already rerun for years on other stations.

For example:

During the NIU incident, "Chicago's very own" was showing funny videos (at least the "Stupidstation" was, the version we get out here in western IL) instead of coverage of the news story. What a shame. The local Quad Cities TV stations were covering it better. I thought it was very inconsiderate of them to show something like that during a sad time.
