I was not aware of this, but the parent company of Street & Smith magazine, American City Business Journals, Inc, purchased the Sporting News magazine over the winter. They have decided to keep the Sporting News name since it's more well known and has so many media tie-ins (radio network, big fantasy baseball website).
I used to buy Street & Smith and the Sporting News yearbook every year before the season started...but now they are a combined 200 pages.
Times Mirror ruined The Sporting News after it bought it from the Spink family. Not that the Spink family was without fault for mistakes. TSN came out editorially in 1947 against Jackie Robinson playing for Brooklyn. But TSN used to be the baseball weekly newspaper of record. Times Mirror turned it into just another sports magazine.
Now the owner of TSN owns professional football and basketball teams. I don't expect improvement in the publication. The Street and Smith baseball yearbook had much more credibility than the one published by TSN. I find it unfortunate, a sort of dumbing down of sports journalism, to retire the Street and Smith nameplate.

They still keep thje S&S name in the trade journals
The radio network is rumored to be going away for good in the next month.
They own a station in Boston that has no listeners and they now are inviting people to pay to host their own show
The station has a phantom 50,000 watts. They can be heard in Norway but not in most of Metro boston
