Joe Borchard to play for 'Hogs during rehab assignment
(04.23.02) Winston-Salem, NC- The Chicago White Sox announced on Tuesday that Joe Borchard, their number one rated prospect will begin a rehab assignment in Winston-Salem, their Class A Affiliate in the Carolina League.

Borchard has been rehabbing a hairline fracture of his right foot at the White Sox Spring Training facility in Tucson, Arizona. The injury occurred March 9th, after fouling a ball off of his foot during a Spring Training game against Colorado.

At the time of the injury Borchard, the Sox's No. 1 draft pick (12th overall) in 2000, was hitting .375 with four RBIs and a .483 on-base percentage. He was expected to start the season in Triple-A Charlotte, where he will likely be sent when he finishes his rehab.

The 6-foot-5 switch-hitter showed why he was worth a $5.3 million signing bonus when he hit .295 with 27 homers and 98 RBIs last year at Double-A Birmingham in his first full professional season. When the regular season concluded, he played in the prestigious Arizona Fall League and then for Team USA in the World Cup, held in Chinese Taipei.

The former Stanford Cardinal quarterback played 14 games with the Warthogs in 2000. Borchard hit .288 with two homeruns and seven RBI in 52 at bats with the 'Hogs.
