View Full Version : Sox to wear '83 throwbacks

According to Mark Gonzalez through Brooks Boyer. Doesn't say when, but also mentions the annual Halfway to St. Patrick's Day green uniforms, as well as the Negro League uniforms. Also, the already mentioned camouflage jerseys.

The Sox will wear their 1983 uniforms (commemorating the 25th anniversary of their American League West title); camouflage jerseys and green outfits for their Halfway to St. Patrick's Day promotion. They will wear their camouflage jerseys on July 4 to honor U.S. troops while dates will be announced later for the other two promotions.

The Sox also will wear Negro League jerseys for a game in Detroit during a series July 25-27.http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/02/retro-uniform-d.html

:lsoxThis logo was the Sox logo from '76 (When Veeck took over the team) until the opening of the new ballpark in '91, but he never appeared on a uniform (except for the BP jerseys in the late seventies).

I'm glad they're wearing the throw back, I love that uniform, I only wish the helmet at home matched the hat.

In an upcoming future interview for WSI we'll go behind the scenes and look at all things marketing, promotional and throwback style uniforms ect done by the White Sox.

And the only time the South Side hitmen logo (baseball player holding a violin case with bats inside it instead of a Tommy-Gun) ever made it on to a piece of clothing was when the Chicago Sun-Times gave away iron-on transfers of it when you bought the paper...I know, I used it on a tee shirt! It was never a part of any piece of "official" game clothing.

I guess it just hit me that its 2008 already. It seems like just yesterday that Loiaza wore the 83 throwbacks in winning his 20th game. That was almost five years ago.:o:

It is nice to see these every so often. Now, they aren't the prettiest unis, but they will always have a special place in our hearts.

Horrible uniforms, and the home cap was so bad I wouldn't wear one. I only had a road cap. At least it didn't look like a propeller beanie.

Who remembers the CTA Bus Race?:smile:I do. I was 11 when the Sox clinched the A.L. West back in '83. Not to mention, I LOVE 80's music, so seeing 80's music videos on YouTube and hearing 80's music on the radio really gives me a thrill. Seeing those uni's brings back some great memories. I'm glad the Sox are only wearing them occasionally, though...you don't want to run a good thing into the ground.

I love the '83 uni's because it takes me back to my childhood. However, they need to make them more like they were originally. For example, the players wore their sleeves much higher back then, and they also wore the high stirrups that lined up with the side stripe on the pants. The red shoes would be a nice touch, too!

Most will have the pants down over the shoetops, and those who wear their pants high will have soccer socks instead of stirrups. I'll even bet we'll see baggy '83 unis.

If I recall correctly the Sox incorrectly wore the 1985 jerseys that day (they are cheaper than the 1983 jerseys.) The 1985 jersey has a patch for the 75th anniversary of Comiskey Park whereas the 1983 jersey has a patch for the 50th anniversary for the first all-star game.

The Sox were supposed to wear the collared uniforms for a "Turn Back the Clock" day in Toronto in 2001 (not the version with the shorts, thank goodness, but just the all-black road uni). But they ended up just wearing the throwback hats. At the time, Hawk said the uniform shirts were all cut too small.

It would be fun to see them try it again. Unfortunately, there wasn't much that happened with the Sox during the 70's that lends itself to a commemoration thirty years later ...

Yeah, you can go to Lids or some other places and find caps with the batter logo on it, but it was never worn by the team on the field.

That's what I was getting at; I've seen the above cap at stores and the ballpark many times, but never on-field. It's a great logo, but it doesn't look right on a cap. I like keeping it authentic:

The shorts seem to take the blame for everything that was bad about that era. It was just one game, wasn't it? Just do a throwback to the several hundred other games where they wore long pants. I'd be fine with that.

Looking at the promotions schedule for the year I spot these:

July 6th vs A's: 80s White Sox hat giveaway
July 18th vs Royals: 80s Night

So possibly look for the jerseys on those dates I'd assume.

Things have gotten so bad for the White Sox that their 1977
uniforms on turn-back-the-clock day in Toronto never were
tailored, leaving them only with caps from the year of the Blue
Jays' inaugural season. This (http://www.bluejays4ever.com/alexgonzalez.html) guy has some short video clips of the game on an Alex Gonzalez fan site. On some of them, you can sort of tell the Sox are wearing the throwback 1977 dark blue S-O-X cap.

I loved those uniforms - I still have the warmup jacket with the script White Sox, even though it's been too small for me to wear for years.
I would joke that the "e" on the cap stood for Einhorn.
Or the more popular joke that it was the Campbell's Soup "c".

I agree with you 100% and we shouldn't just stop there. Pants should never be worn over the shoe tops and stirrups should be mandatory to a baseball uniform.

Finally I have to say this, the red pinstriped uni is my LEAST favorite. It's not bad, but I just never understood why the WHITE Sox wore Red. At least black I can kind of see a connection (like the opposite of white) and Veeck's unis were a throw back to the turn of the 20th Century unis while the '83 are still my favorite for sentimental reasons, because that's the uni they wore when I was born, I have a picture of me as a two month old wearing that jersey...but in the '83 uni I never liked how the helmet at home didn't match the hat at home.

:?:

So, what? Have them wear gear made 25 years ago, or have the companies make cleats, helmets, and the like so its 'really' authentic throwbacks?

I like how they do retros, as they are a tip of the hat to previous generations yet still are playable and marketable by today's standards.
