View Full Version : Sox Ranked 3rd in Preseason ESPN Power Poll

Not sure if these rankings are meant to be serious or a joke - it is from Page 2, after all - but they've got the Sox at #3 in MLB and #1 in the AL (we're only behind the Mets and Phillies). I think the Sox will contend, but that's a bit of a stretch. And some of the others make absolutely no sense (Twins at #5, Royals at #11, Red Sox at #15, Angels at #20?)

Here's the link (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=neel/080219&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab3pos1)

Surprising, since many baseball people feel the White Sox had a "terrible" offseason.

I guess the article is a good conversation piece. My hunch is that the Sox will contend, even to the point of surprising a few people.

Joke.

But please someone save it so we can crow about it when we do, in fact, win it all this year. (NO TEAL!!)

I would say joke, but I don't see what the point is? It's not like the descriptions are even funny? Unless they are talking about some sort of chemistry factor or 'best Spring Training team' joke aspect. I'm down on Boston too in my predictions, but no way anyone at ESPN puts them that low

Joke

The Mets are ranked second and the Tigers are 4th, and both of those seem like good picks.

If it's a joke at all, it's a joke soley aimed at the Sox. However, since ESPN doesn't care enough about the Sox to do something like this, I take the list as 100% serious.

Edit- I take back everything I said. The Red Sox are ranked 16th. Yes, it's a joke.

Only at WSI do people not realize Page 2 material is joking.

I'm pretty sure its a joke. I just don't necessarily get their criteria. Their fantasy guy predicted that any improvement to the lineup would be offset by the rotation's decline and Ozzie would be fired.

oh, you should see the bodybuilding.com reaction to the article. Two pages of whining red sox fans.

I knew this was a joke when I first saw it, but I'm being honest, I don't get it.

does anybody get the humor in this article?

It seems to be a joke based purely on random facts and nothing more than that.

It's ESPN, incompetence does not come as a surprise or a wonder.

I understand it as ranked by offseason mojo- the Kendrick joke gets the top spot, followed by Pedro saying what he did, and the Sox with Ozzie saying hes going back to swearing. Astros are at the bottom cause of Clemens, A's with the fire sale, and the Cubs cause of Dempsters World Series comment.

I think its just based on how much they like the comments mentioned in the rankings or the articles discussed.

Anna Bensen first place.
Boston with no news is good news right in the middle at number 16.
Last place Roger Clemens.

Doesn't seem like its based on teams themselves. Its a joke, but not in a mocking poor teams and putting them at number 1 way.
