Eh, seems more addition by subtraction than anything. Mota is a little interesting, a former OF turned pitcher who has a possible power arm, but right now seemingly no other pitches.

Good trade for Boston. And for the Sox, they weren't going to do anything with Aardsma after last season. It was so strange how he collapsed. That's why its a good move for Boston, there's still that slight chance he can go back to doing what he was his first 20 IP.

I don't know anything about these prospects, but I'm happy to see the Sox were able to get something for Aardsma. It looks like his arm has fooled yet another team. :D:

I can't say I'm too surprised. Hopefully, the Sox can develop both Mota and Socolovich well enough, so we can see them contribute in the future.

I'm looking at the bright side. Aardsma is gone, that's good enough for me.

He had a brief spell of adequacy, but it faded.

You figured this would happen after the Dotel signing, they got something out of him.
Thanks for the 3 strikeouts with the bases-loaded and no one out.

Doesn't look like we got much for him, but he's got to make the Red Sox roster or he's a FA so probably got as much as could be expected.

With our luck, he'll be this year's Riske.

That home run in Detroit was the beginning of the end. He absolutely imploded after that. :?:

Yeah, I love the emphasis on the April stats and then the way they kind of gloss over the fact that Aardsma fell of the map thereafter before being sent down and having a mediocre second half at AAA (most would call it a bad second half in AAA).

2-0, 1.31 with 26 strikeouts in 20.2 innings in his first 14 appearances through May 12. Aardsma led all A.L. relievers with 23 strikeouts in April. Overall, he was 2-1, 6.40 with 36 strikeouts in 32.1 innings in his 25 relief appearances with the White Sox.

Translation:

First 14 Appearances: 20.2 IP 26 K 1.31 ERA (3 ER surrendered)

Next and final 11 appearances: 11.2 IP 10 K 23.14 ERA (30 ER surrendered)

I think I got those numbers right, but I've got a headache, so maybe I goofed. That second group seems insane...

He's always had hype to him. 97 MPH fastball with movement. He's got talent, but hasn't put it together. Sox had no more room or time to wait for him to put it together, because he may never.

I always thought his problem was not having enough movement for a pitcher with no other out pitch.

If he's not good enough for our bullpen, how in the hell is he good enough for Boston's?

They gave up nothing for a guy who has shown something. That's a good move. He's probably not good enough to make it, but they have roster room to give him a shot at this point.

He 'showed something' for the Cubs too, and that worked out pretty well.

Once the scouting report becomes: all he has is a fastball, he's done. If he could ever develop some sort of off-speed stuff, he might be a solid reliever. We'll see if that ever happens, though.

The Sox had designated him for assignment when the signed Dotel, so he was gone in a matter of a week or so anyway. The the fact that they got anything for him is good. They probably saved a few bucks in salary, and it gives the minor league teams a couple of arms to try out.
