The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with infielders Brad Eldred, Royce Huffman, Jeff Liefer and Michael Rouse, catchers Paul Phillips and Ryan Smith, infielder/outfielder Jason Bourgeois, outfielder Miguel Negron and right-handed pitcher D.J. Carrasco. All nine players, in addition to infielder Chris Getz, have received non-roster invites to the club's spring training camp in Tucson, Ariz.

Low risk, high reward.

Just like '05!

I'm glad we picked up Burgoius (or however you spell his name) He looked like he could be a good utility player in AAA. Played multiple positions, has speed. Sounds like your typical bench player!

I look forward to seeing what, if anythign, Carrasco has.

We love ex-Royals bullpen guys here on the South Side, right?

Seriously though, him and Jason Bourgeois are the only names on that list that did anything for me.

Yeah, the only I would give a half a chance at making any kind of impression is Jason Bourgeois.

Does anyone here remember how mad people were when the Sox traded Leifer to get Colon? Many people thought they should get rid of Konerko and let Leifer play. We see now how that would have went.

Liefer hit the first and only foul ball I ever caught. It was at the same game as the Ligue Father and Son run-in with the KC 1B coach. Definately a bittersweet night to be a Sox Fan.

Carraso could be interesting. I think he's about the only one on that list that has any kind of chance to make the team.

If you get one decent person out of that list, it's a success. That is one "sorry" list in regards to potential ML talent, but even a sorry list can potentially contain some unharvested talent.

Not in 2003.

Off the top of my head, Armando Rios, Brian Daubach, and Esteban Loaiza all made the team.

We haven't even had a Jeff Liefer appreciation thread!

I attended a game where Jeff Liefer hit a 3-run homer in the seventh inning to tie a game against the Devil Rays in August of 2001. The Sox went on to lose 5-4 when Tampa Bay executed a squeeze bunt to score a run off Foulke in the ninth. IIRC, Jason Tyner was the culprit.

Anyway, that is my best memory of Jeff Liefer.

Another former Royal. I believe Carrasco has been pitching in Japan recently.

See how much production the White Sox have gotten out of LH hitters drafted by the organization since Jeff Liefer hit 18 HR's for the 2001 team.

Almost nothing.

This is not typical though. Usually it's a bunch of retreads, rehabbers, career bench players, career minor leaguers, and guys with former success trying to regain their form (has beens.)

The only guy on this list with a legit chance that doesn't fit into one of the categories above is Jason Bourgeois. He has great speed and can play multiple positions and could make for a solid utility player. However, if he doesn't make it by mid '09 or so, he'll fall into the career minor leaguer category.

Last time I saw DJ Carrasco he couldn't throw a strike.

While I obviously don't expect that type of success from a non-roster list, this list is VERY, very pathetic. It seems like they threw it together in 9 minutes. "This guy here is dead".

I seem to remember a game in Baltimore where Liefer absolutely clubbed a HR off the warehouse facade at Camden Yards. That is the moment that sticks out for me. Liefer did have some big pop in his bat when he ran into one. I'm sure he'll hit his 25 HRs down in Charlotte next year if that is where he ultimately ends up. With Swisher on the club as a backup 1B, I don't see Liefer being able to crack the roster as a bench player. I wish him well though. I got his autograph at Sox Fest one year and he seemed like a pretty nice guy. I know my wife is happy that he is back but she admired him for his "rugged" good looks and not his baseball ability.

My best memory was when he left.

I am amazed Liefer doesn't get Ross Gload type love around here. A subset of people here really love crappy backup 1Bs.

I attended the 1st ever matchup between the Sox and Braves here in Atlanta a few years back and Liefer saw my Sox hat and threw me a ball during BP. Unfortunately, that's all I remember of him with the Sox.

That bathroom story was funny though. I hadn't heard about that until today.

Jeff Liefer. Just the player we need to recapture that '01-02 magic.

I forgot about that bathroom story. Thanks for bringing it up again.
