The Indians have sold the naming rights to an auto insurance company:

Indians' home will be 'Progressive Field' (http://blog.cleveland.com/plaindealer/2008/01/indians_home_will_be_progressi.html)

It's amazing it took this long given how badly the current owners got hosed by Jacobs when they bought the team.

EDIT: there must be a recently-expired covenant relating to the naming rights under the purchase agreement...

It may have a different name eventually, but the Indians have a great ballpark.

Progressive just laid off alot of workers too. The comments under that linked article are NOT happy about that.

It expired in 2006

So a team whose mascot is this...

...will now play in a stadium named Progressive Field?

Oh the irony...http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f224/TheDarkGundam/emot-laugh.gif

Oh the irony...http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f224/TheDarkGundam/emot-laugh.gifMore surprising than you might think, because the insurance company is, in fact, named Progressive because of the political leanings of the owner. Given that, I'm surprised he wanted to associate himself with the name and logo.

Sigh...it's only a matter of time before all stadiums are named after companies.

I've always though The Jake and the Rangers' place look like they should be on a movie studio backlot.

For the record, Wrigley Field isn't named after the company, it's named for the man who the company is also named for.

Is any of this really a big deal? Do you support the Sox less because it's U.S. Cellular Field? Would the World Series have been better if the park was still named Comiskey Park?
