The National Anthems of Canada and the US played before the 1983 All Star Game at Comiskey.

Who was the PA announcer then?

To answer your question, I don't know.

The White Sox didn't host the All-Star game in 1993.

And my favorite part of the pre-game was Wayne introducing the "shorting startstop." :D: Can't remember for which league or who the player was though.

Wayne Messmer had the PA job until the mid/late 80's.

Thanks, Fenway, for providing that. I enjoyed it. The American League broke an 11-game losing streak to the Nationals that night, winning big (I think 11-3 was the score). Fred Lynn hit a grand slam (he was a member of the Angels then).

Where's the love for Chuck Mangione?

There's a name I haven't heard in 20+ years.

There's a ton of references and cameos with him on King of the Hill.

I won't be impressed unless they have tons of references and cameos from Atlee Hammaker. :D:

Thanks for the video. It was great. By the way....Is Chuck Mangione related to Gallagher the comedian?:D:

Bob Finnegan did the PA before Wayne Messmer. When Wayne went to the Cubs, Bob resumed his old duties until he retired after the 1990 season. Of course, Gene Honda replaced Bob.

On a side note, does anyone know if Bob Finnegan is still alive?

Good job by the Oak Ridge Boys.

Why can't more singers of the National Anthem sing it like that, instead of shoving it full of their own interpretations and and improvisations? And why can't they sing it that quickly? I know I sound like an old fart (I'm only 31), but so many vocalists today think they need to "make it their own" and "extend their time" in the spotlight of singing it.

My wife and I were lucky enough to be at that game. That year the Sox had a lottery-by-mail for available AS Game tickets and I sent in the requisite postcards. Ding! We got two tickets. Our seats were among the worst in the house, in one of the back rows in the left-field corner lower deck behind two (!) posts. But we didn't care -- we were there and loved it.

Loved too seeing the AL roll over the NL that night. Lynn's slam made the place electric. A "celebrity" sighting for us was watching Morganna, the Kissing Bandit, jump the low wall in the left-field corner to run on the field. She was stopped by two security guys before she even crossed the foul line. The circus really had come to town. :redneck

The only downside for us is that we don't have pictures. We had an Instamatic camera and took a whole roll of shots but the camera got lost shortly after that, and before we'd taken the film to be developed.

But it was still a great time and a good year to be a Sox fan. :gulp:
