That's two years in a row now that the Angels have a huge free agent, center fielder signing.
It looks like Matthews numbers went down quite a bit from his big year in 2006, so I can see that the Angels are looking to replace that, but are they worried about HGH allegations? Is there anything that can be done to Matthews is he is busted for this?

Actually this is what sportsline has to say.

Although Torii Hunter (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/10813)'s arrival would appear to make Gary Matthews (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/21628) the odd man out, manager Mike Scioscia said Matthews would have an active role and that having Hunter would give him more options. He intends to use Vladimir Guerrero (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/7669) and Garret Anderson (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/7386) at DH some, and have Matthews spell them in the outfield. "Torii is going to be in center field virtually every day. Gary will be in the outfield almost every day, so the other two guys will split up the DH," Scioscia said. "We want all four of those bats in the lineup. We want Gary Matthews (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/21628) as part of this. I expect a positive response. His contributions will be very valuable to this club." Matthews was in New York this month to meet with baseball officials and discuss allegations he received human grown hormone. The Angels have had no indications Matthews might be suspended. "They shocked me. I didn't think they needed a center fielder," Hunter said. "They shocked the world."

That's really some wild spending to be breaking the bank for the same position two years in a row.

Well actually, they didn't really have a DH last year. With the signing, they'll now have quality at DH.

Yeah, and pretty soon they'll have four of them!

I just assumed this meant Vlad in Rf, Hunter in CF, Matthews in LF and Anderson at DH. That's a pretty incredible defensive OF.

I'm guessing he is talking about when Anderson, Vlad, and Hunter are all too old to play OF at the back end of their contracts.

The Angels are one of those teams that could afford to eat a final year of a deal without much problem if it happens that way...But Anderson will be gone long before Vlad or Hunter need to DH. He is in the last year of his deal (club option next year), so they are really just looking forward a bit. Vlad is still a very good defensive RF with his arm. And Hunter will be a fine defensive OF throughout that contract, as long as he can move to a corner in 3-4 years if he needs to.
