November 3, 1988 - The Sox name Jeff Torborg as the team’s new field manager. Torborg a former major league catcher, and Indians manager, gains notable success with the club. His ‘team and family’ philosophy takes hold and a young group of players stun the baseball world by winning 94 games in 1990. He would be named Manager of the Year that season.

I loved having Jeff Torborg as the manager of the White Sox. I remember his enthusiasm and the energy with which he lead the 1990 team in particular. What a fun season 1990 was! It was sad that it was the final season for Old Comiskey Park, but the Sox future was so full of promise and hope. A young team gave us White Sox fans something to hope for after all the losing seasons in the 1970's and the 1980's. I was very sad when Jeff Torborg left (I remember something about having to go back to NY to care for his mother?)

The Torborg days were good ones. It was a fun time to be a White Sox fan because we could sense and see the progress with the young club he was managing. The White Sox were the perfect fit for Torborg, but as much as I hate to point this out, when the Mets made an offer for him to manage their club, the Sox "suggested" that he accept it.
