Great article by the Lipper with Rich Lindberg. Rich offered some
food for thought. (lippy's much better at interviews than analysis).
Anyway, Lindberg made me think. I wonder if the team will last
long in Chicago. I know I put up previous posts ripping the same
message from others. This time it made me think I guess because
it didn't come from a lippy, arrogant sports journalist calling us
"stupid" nor was it a heaping helping of gloom from a guy who
comes across as a chronic depressive. It was a thoughtful, bal-
anced analysis that didn't condescend or say "give it up."
Lindberg said several things that ring true. First, we must unite
behind the team and support them, if for no other reason than
to prevent them from leaving town and leaving our Cubbies as
the only team. Imagine them being the personification of Chi-
cago. Second City indeed. We would have to change Chicago's
nickname to the Sixth City, in honor of the Cubs usual resting
spot in the NL Central.
The other thing he said was that Reinsdorf won't own the team
forever. And he's right!! The team was around long before him,
it can be around long after if the fans want it that way. He's just
one owner who'll be gone. Sox fans have patiently ridden him
out this long. We could put up with him a while longer.
He also spoke about the media, which is a theme everyone here has beaten to death, so I won't go on and on about that
except to say that it is surely no surprise that the Tribune
found a few people to gripe about the "obstructed view" that
the new backdrop causes.
