Terry Francona has a problem as somebody has to sit Game 3 out.

But who?

Ortiz? Lowell? Youkilis?

Papi, Youkilis, or Lowell -- Who's out? (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/polls/10_26_07_lineups)

Temperatures for the first World Series game played in Colorado are expected to be in the high 30s or low 40s, with a slight breeze and no precipitation, said National Weather Service forecaster Mike Baker.

I wish I took my camera, but I went to a Washington Capitals game tonight (vs the Canucks), and there was a "mascot" dressed up exactly like Cookie Monster. This wasn't the Caps mascot, who is an eagle (like seemingly every other team here).

BOSTON (http://www.broadcastnewsroom.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=208625#), Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- With the Boston Red Sox in the World Series and High-Definition TVs growing in popularity, Comcast (http://www.broadcastnewsroom.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=208625#) is responding to strong consumer demand for High-Definition (HD) cable boxes by announcing that it will extend hours at select Boston-area service centers on Saturday, October 27.

"Watching a game in the crystal-clear clarity of High-Definition is the next best thing to actually sitting in the stands," said Paul D'Arcangelo, Vice President for Comcast's Metro Boston Region. "The Red Sox post-season has sent demand for HD service into high-gear and we're happy to meet that consumer demand by extending hours at select service centers for those who want to pick up an HD cable box."

Dan Shaughnessy writes about the bandwagon fans we all hate

There are people who claim to be members of Red Sox Nation who have no idea that Bucky Dent's middle name is Bleeping. There are people under pink hats wearing PEDROIA jerseys who think Big Papi, not Ted Williams, is the greatest hitter who ever lived. They don't know that there was a guy named Radatz who threw harder than Papelbon or that there was a time not long ago when a black cloud followed the Boston baseball club.

The Red Sox and their entitled traveling Nationalists who've been taking over other people's ballparks for three years have officially jumped the shark. They are Nouveau Nation - rich folks who'd demolish a 200-year-old colonial to make way for a hideous, horizon-blocking McMansion.

Denver braces for the invasion from Boston

So how do they do it, especially with all the problems that Rockies fans had getting tickets to their own stadium?
Matta has a theory.

"M.I.T.," he says, a reference to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "We have better technology. Better software."
Matta and the rest of the guys at Baseball Tavern got their tickets through a friend known to most people as Higs Tickets who managed to get through the Rockies ticketing system on Monday, the day of the now notorious computer system meltdown.

GLOBE GRAPHIC: Baseball in Denver (http://www.boston.com/news/multimedia/coors_field)

At 5,280 feet above sea level, fastballs will possess more zip but less lift as they streak toward home plate.

Curveballs, meanwhile, will fly less curvaceously, while sliders will lose snap - tending to fly straighter than pitchers would wish.
Baseball is about physics as much as physical coordination and conditioning. And the atmospheric physics of mile-high Denver are markedly different from those of Boston-by-the-Sea.

"There will be a definite effect" on World Series games played in Denver, said Alan M. Nathan, a physicist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Maine native, and ardent citizen of Red Sox Nation. "It probably won't be a decisive effect, but it will be a real factor."

I don't see this as a good move. Youkilis is one of the hottest hitters on the team and approximately 1,242,983.63% better than Ortiz at first.

I'm with you with the AL pride, and clearly the AL is much, much stronger than the NL. But the "gee aren't the Red Sox great?" crap and the general Red Sox-lovefest is way over the top. Nearly enough to have me rooting for the Rockies. I hope, at least, that the Rockies don't get swept.

Right. The worst crime of this series is that it's been so boring. Even the 2-1 game seemed over early because of the weakness of the Rockies lineup.

Tim McCarver :?:

Says it all, I think.

Yeah...especially when calling Jason Varitek the "Sergeant Major of the Red Sox". O.K., Tim...that's cool if you want to do that, but at least have the common courtesy to us current of former members of the U.S. Army to have Fox put up the proper rank for Sergeant Major...

http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Graphics/1SG.gif

This is what they showed on TV describing Varitek. Which looks fine until you hear McCarver call him the "Sergeant Major..." Hey Tim...that's not Army Sergeant Major rank...that's FIRST SERGEANT rank, which is one enlisted grade lower. This...

http://www.abinsignia.com/nam47.jpg

is Sergeant Major rank structure. Or at least one of 3 Sergeant Major ranks. Another one has 3 stripes up, 3 chevrons (lower stripes) down, a star in the middle with a wreath surrounding it. That's Command Sergeant Major. The next rank up from that is 3 up, 3 down, and 2 stars in the middle. That's Command Sergeant Major of the Army, and there's only one person who fills those shoes.

The moral of the story, Tim McCarver, is if you're going to use military rank to describe a player, at least have the sense to use the right rank with the right title.
