All tickets available for Games 3, 4, and 5 (if necessary) of this year's World Series will only be sold online at www.coloradorockies.com beginning Monday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. MT.

"After our experience with the Wild Card tiebreaker game, as well as Division Series and Championship Series games, we came to the conclusion that no other method of ticket distribution is quicker or more efficient than the Internet." (quote from Rockies President Keli McGregor)

http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20071017&content_id=2270051&vkey=pr_col&fext=.jsp&c_id=col

The Phillies, Padres and Mets also conducted internet-only sales of postseason tickets but this is the first time the World Series has been internet-only.

In addition to being sold online, the secondary market for Rockies tickets are through the roof.

Days before World Series seats at Coors Field go on sale to the general public, ticket brokers and "marketplaces" such as StubHub and TicketsNow are already offering spots at the big games. The prices, though, range from about $400 for a Rockpile seat - which is a $65 face value for the World Series and a $4 ticket during the regular season - to nearly $6,000 for the best seats.

StubHub, TicketsNow and other sites were seeing brisk business Thursday. Sean Pate, a StubHub spokesman, said Rockies World Series tickets are the hottest seller on the site, with an average sale price of about $750 and a high-seller of about $3,000.

On TicketsNow, another large secondary marketplace, the average sale price was about $800.

Crazy question-

Is there anything to prevent someone from Chicago, for example, from trying to buy these tickets online Monday? Or, does the Rockies site have IP address safeguards so that only people from Colorado can try to buy tickets?

The Colorado Rockies have suspended online sales for World Series tickets, spokesman Jay Alves said this afternoon.

Alves said that several hundred sales that went through today will be honored.

"We are as frustrated and disappointed as (fans) are," Alves said.
The company that operates the servers experienced massive failures, he said, and all of the sales the company handles were impacted.

It was unclear when World Series sales would resume.
Alves told fans who had gathered at Coors Field that they should go home, as there would be no sales at the box office today, either.

They should. If you want to make an exception, maybe allow anyone who has previous bought 2007 Rockies tickets from some other location. At least that would remove a lot of the Boston traffic. If the Red Sox fans want to spread their virus to Denver, they should have to pay through the nose for it.

Paciolan, Inc., which provides ticketing networks to Major League Baseball and 700 college and professional teams, was "amazed and overwhelmed" when it was flooded by 8.5 million hits for tickets in 90 minutes, Alves said.

It seems like the World Series should be a chance to reward the really hardcore Rockies fans with a chance to see their team on a stage they never thought possible. Internet sales unfortunately seem to reward scalpers and ticket brokers.

If I was in charge, here's what I would do:

First, any Rockies fan who would be willing to commit to a full season ticket package for 2008 would be eligible to purchase World Series tickets (one WS ticket for each game for each full season ticket). (Same idea the Sox used in '05).

Remaining tickets would be sold in this order:

-Current Rockies season ticket holders would be eligible to purchase extra tickets depending on their current plan. Full season ticket plans would be eligible to buy an extra two tickets for each seat currently owner, smaller plans would be able to buy one extra ticket. This is a reward. If those season ticket holders choose to scalp the extra tickets, at least they weren't scalped by a professional broker. The money is kept in the family.

-The Rockies should then look at their mailing list and ticket sales through Rockies.com. Any credit card holder who has purchased tickets to a game over the past five years should get a chance to buy tickets, along with former season ticket holders. I know mlb.com makes you sign up when you purchase tickets online, so the data base should be there.

-Additional tickets should be put on sale at the box office, with a limit of two seats per person.

-Any remaining tickets should be given to the local boys & girls club of greater Denver.

There's absolutely no reason whatsoever for someone in Boston to be able to buy a ticket online for a World Series game in Colorado if they haven't been there sometime in the past. (My plan accounts for the rare situation where a transplanted Rockies fan may actually want to fly back and see the game as long as they've been there recently).

If they didn't want out of town residents to buy the tickets they should have sold them physically, cause technically everyone has the choice to show up physically to buy them (and granted, it'd be much more of an encumberance for out of towners). If they just get lazy and block 99% of internet IPs then I'm going to cry foul.. that'd be totally lame. What if I was a diehard Rockies fan living elsewhere/out of town on business/etc?

just an idea - if you get the problem loading ev.3 or something like that, I'm gonna hit the "try again" for awhile since that is where you need to get anyways.
Edit- just took me back to the waiting page

According to their philosophy on efficiency, maybe they'll announce that everyone needs to get to Coors as fast as possible to purchase tickets

Rockies spokesman Jay Alves spoke to reporters at 12:36 p.m. and denied there were problems and said tickets were being sold.

"The online sales are going through at this point," said Alves. "It's very busy. It's very slow, but we're hoping it picks up."

Unfortunately, it's making the Rockies front office look extraordinarily bad. I don't think they are as incompetent as this fiasco would have people believe.

True. I guess the roads around the ballpark were closed down most of the afternoon yesterday due to people flocking there after the suspension.

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies hoped the second time would be the charm as World Series tickets were back on sale but most fans reported computer problems trying to buy tickets.

A quick check of fans showed most reported getting the "countdown page" which starts over after it counts down to zero. Today, instead of a 60-second countdown, users were greeted with a 120-second countdown. A number of fans reported the countdown page then took them to a "page not found."

Has their ticket system provider handled something of this magnitude before? Obviously it's the Rockies responsibility but really it's the fault of the ticket provider. It's not like some assistant to the assistant to the assistent ticket director of the Rockies is writing code.

I've got a meeting in 45 minutes, what's the over-under on whether or not I can get tickets in that time?

I'm going with 8.5 million to 1

I wonder if those teams have a bigger season ticket base, meaning less ticket availability for playoff games, and if the "problems" are only being exposed because this is the world series.

I don't think anything's wrong, it's just what happens when hundreds of thousands of people try to get to the same spot. I'm sure for the few getting tickets it's going through smooth. It'd be like trying to shove a bucket of golf balls down a pipe not much bigger than a golf ball. Some will ge through and some will fall out. I think the demand for this is much higher than it'd be for those otehr teams because it's the world series and Boston's involved.

Sorry, Manders. That so sucks!

Thanks Mary.

I guess if I wasn't able to watch my first favorite baseball team in person and they won, it's okay if I don't get to watch my second favorite baseball team in person.

Besides, as one of my co-workers put it, when we hear everyone yelling, we can just run out of the bar and join them. :D:

Good point!

Suggestion: what I did in 2001 (Yanks/D'Backs) was invite a bunch of friends over for the games--including a couple of Yankee fans. I set up a hot dog bar--dogs, fixins', some baked beans--and had all the TVs going.

Game 7 got a little tense. I had to warn one of my Yankee fan friends that I was seriously thinking about tying a rock around her foot and chucking her into the pool. But all in all, I think I'd have done it the same way had the D'Backs beaten the Rockies.

Also, the D'Backs set up a Jumbotron outside BOB (at the time) and people were able to watch the game AND hear the crowd noises. If the Rockies do the same, you might want to check it out.

Anyway, the important thing is that your team absolutely HAS to kick some Red Sox ass!

Plenty of places in LoDo to watch the game. Although it may be a little chilly if they have the windows/doors open at the front so you can hear the stadium.

My sister can hear fireworks from her townhouse, but a little too far for crowd noise.

Jackson's Hole is right across the street and you can hear everything just fine. I'm guessing we will be there or Sports Column. Either way we're talking about less than 500 feet.

I can see/hear the fireworks but no crowd noise from my place as well.
