October 11, 1899 - The new American League is formed in Chicago. The city doesn’t have a team in the league for now but soon will get the St. Paul team with their player / manager Charles Comiskey. They will set up shop on the South Side.

October 11, 1991 - Sox manager Jeff Torborg who was named ‘Manager of the Year’ for 1990 resigns to take the job as manager of the New York Mets. Two stories surround his leaving. One is that he wanted to be closer to his ailing mother, the other was that members of the front office didn’t care for his approach to handling pitchers, in particular Bobby Thigpen and that if he didn’t take the Mets job he’d be fired. (Donn Pall talks specifically about pitching and playing for Torborg in his interview with White Sox Interactive.)

Charles Comiskey, turned to his right, sitting in front of a backdrop in Chicago, Illinois circa 1902!

Torborg has been the best Sox manager in my lifetime. I thought it was a shame he left, whether he was forced out or not. That '90 team is my favorite right behind the '05 Sox.

Hindsight is 20/20 on whether or not he overused Thiggy. I don't remember many people complaining about it in 1990 when he was racking up 57 saves.

Lip, this is a silly question but where was that photo of Torborg taken? It looks like they're wearing their home uniform from the 1990 season but I don't remember there being any blue around the dugout of Old Comiskey. Was it there ST complex?

That's the 1990 Topps baseball card, which means the photo was taken in 1989 (Torborg wasn't part of the Traded set that year). It very well could have been taken in Spring Training of 1989.

The Sox did have blue around the revamped spring training complex in Sarasota. That would be my guess.
