Nice win for the D-backs. Plus, seeing Marmol finally melt down a bit was nice. Keep it up guys.

Hopefully this perfect storm of inane media blathering of all things Cubs will abate a little.

Soriano really looks like he's hurting. It will be interesting if he can go tomorrow and at what percentage of full strength...

BTW - Did you guys see that clown beind the plate in the 9th inning with the red neon sign?? And why wasn't he escorted to the Phoenix lockup?

One down, two to go.

I am glad that Dick Stockton explained to me that, in a best of five series, the first team to three wins takes it. He really cleared that up.

The game was nice, and the broadcast was pretty good. Not as much of the Cub fluff as you would expect, though they did show every single Cubs fan at the game after every Cub hit. The announcers pretty much stayed down the middle. But playoff baseball just isn't the same without Chris Berman, or Jeannie Zelasko and ridiculous robot noises and animations every time the score changes. It doesn't feel like baseball anymore.

Did you hear the hyper-hypocrisy in the top of the ninth on the WGN radio broadcast? Ron Slanto kept complaining about Valverde being a "hot dog" and being ticked off by Valverde's histrionics. (For the record, I don't like Valverde's act either.) Ron Slanto is one to complain though about the celebrations, considering that he is known for clicking his heals in celebration of a win and when has he ever complained about Zambrano or Sammy Sosa?

Brandon Webb is not a "kid." He's the best pitcher in the National League. And he's the reason the Cubs didn't really stand a chance.

Cubs and Pinella messed up when they let Zambrano swing away after Theriot reached 2nd with no outs on the throwing error. Zambrano lines out, next batter is Sorianno who flys out to center that would have scroed Theriot if he was sacrificed over. That is not playoff baseball neither is Derrick Lee striking out and the ball gets away and he throws his bat instead of running to first. Just a poor all around game for the Cubs. See what happens the rest of the series. I don't care who wins.

LOL. That is rich! Certainly, Valverde's crap is unnecessary, but the Cubbies are living in a glass house by complaining about that.

Zambrano and Soriano never hotdog anything.

I disagree. His first at bat, he drilled Webb's 1st pitch for a double. If the guy's got Webb's number, you let him swing. It's not like Zambrano can't hit. With a man on 2nd and nobody out, you've got a chance to start a big inning with the top of the order up after him. With Webb pitching, you've got to strike when you've got him reeling. And Zambrano hit the ball pretty well.

When you got Webb on the hill, you get what you can take. 1 run is tough enough to get off him and they would have had it there. Sure, Zambrano can hit a ball every now and then likely better then most pitchers in the NL, but he still is a pitcher and the bunt there is the only option when ur pitcher is up........ but we can agree to disagree, not like I care anyways cuz its the cubs

I think that guy behind home plate was our "beloved" Cellphone Chad. After he took down the sign, his back was turned away from the game, as he was probably talking to someone, saying "look I was on TV!" He should've been escorted out, as was the guy at Shea who did that with a laser pointer. One down, two to go!

I didn't see to much of the game tonight, I was too busy rolling my first ever 300 game(!!!) earlier this evening. But, on the way home, Sweet Lou was catching a boatload of flak from the national radio sportsblab guys for pulling Big Z after only 6 innings and 85 pitches. Makes me wonder...is Lou saving Z for a game 4 when there may not BE a game 4, after squandering a decent chance to win game 1?

With probable horror, I am sure Fenway remembers the woman at Shea Stadium who kept rolling her arms to distract the Red Sox pitchers during the 1986 World Series. She sat in the front row right behind home plate in full view from the NBC center field camera. If someone at our ballpark had done what this "Cellphone Chad" did with the Cubs neon sign, Sox Security would have escorted him out right away. Apparently, "Chad" was allowed to remain in his seats the rest of the game.

Save that paper. Cubbie fans have been spouting off quite a bit for people who are fans of a team that hasn't done anything in 99 years.

My last words on this will be a paraphrase of my first words - the Sox are the "other team" in Chicagoland, and may be even more marginal after the Cubs win the 2007 World Series. - Cubbie fan boasting in the Sox newsgroup on 9/21/07

I agree.

On a side note...

I heard Dane Placko interviewed by Boers & Bernstein yesterday. Placko went on and on about how great Lou P. is and continually ripped Dusty. Not that I disagree with Placko, but I wondered if Placko was like the rest of the media who heaped praise and love on Dusty when he was Cubbie manager? No doubt Placko was busy heaping love on Dusty in '03 even after the Cubbies choked.

Here's a bit of the medias mantra when Dusty was the Cubbie manager:

"Dusty is great manager...Dusty will have the Cubbies in the post-season every season...Free agents are lining up to sign with the Cubbies because Dusty is manager..."

The guy must have been quite intoxicated. After being caught for his little stunt, he picked up a cup of something (tea/coffee/beer/who knows), went to drink it, and flat dropped it on the ground before it got to his mouth. I've had that happen to me at a bar, under the guise of very dark lighting, but he displayed his utter ineptitude in front of ten million people.

Exactly! They need to talk about the Cubs more because up until now, I've heard nothing.

You're right, the Cubs coverage has been so underwhelming. Everyday I get hammered with Byrnes and Young from the D'backs in the papers and on TV. You hear nothing about Sweet Lou, Soriano, and Big Z. Nothing about curses, Bartman, or loyal Cubs fans. The Cubs need to win to free us from this media circus of Diamondbacks coverage.

View the Cubs like the Cardinals, Giants, Braves etc etc etc. In all honesty I only care for them to lose 6 times a year.

Apparently you care for the Cubs more than to just lose 6 times a year. You root for them to win in the playoffs.

Now that is funny!!!I knew you would like that.
I heard Les said that the ratio of Cubs fans to D-backs fans last night was 9-1.

Right. Who are we to believe--Les or our lying eyes? Anyone who watched that game knows better.

Right. Who are we to believe--Les or our lying eyes? Anyone who watched that game knows better.I was kidding. For the series at the Urinal in 05, it was AT LEAST 40% Sox fans in the crowd, and the Sox fans were much louder than the Cubs fans. Afterwards, Les did a "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" and claimed the ratio was at least 9-1 for Cubs fans.

Okay, gotcha.
Too bad; I was gonna suggest that Webster's include Les's picture next to "bandwagon" in their next revision! :D:

Gotta go, leaving for the game.

Ya I wish success for CHICAGO teams. What is wrong with that? All because 99% of this cities baseball fans get into this pissing match between team alliances I don't. I'm more concerned with what our division rivals due opposed to the other team in the city.
Also there is financial benefits tied into a Cubs World Series.:D:

Financial benefits for whom? Are you getting a raise if they go to the WS?

I'm not rooting for the Cubs to lose because I'm a Sox fan. I guess I'm just indifferent. WSI will probably explode if the Cubs go to the WS so that is one reason I want them to bow out.:D:

No before every offseason for the last 5 years I have put 50 dollars across the board for the Chicago teams. White Sox really cashed me in after 2005 I'm hoping for the same from the Cubs this year.

I don't know about the World Series, but I know I have some newfound fiscal incentive for the Cubs making the NLCS. So for the next three games I think I might have to root for the North Siders

That was total BS that guy spouted. Anyone who watched the game can tell you he was flashing it every single time Valverde was going into his wind up. Unbelievable.

Did you see the Fox interview Viva? Were they on the side of the Cubs fan and circling the wagons to protect him?

Well, Placko didn't exactly play hardball in the interview.

My dad just told me that they are calling the Diamondbacks the "Baby Backs" because they are so young. Actually has a better ring than the Baby Bulls cause it makes me hungry for ribs.

Congrats! I'm impressed that a Sox gal and a Cubs guy can last for so long. I've a similar situation going on and I'm just on one day at a time (though my sis is in a similar situation as well and is going strong). Have fun, even though you and your hubby are washing each other out when it comes to the ratio.

I like the way the Diamondbacks play, and I appreciate an organization who can put together a really good team through shrewd trades, young talent, and smart business decisions.

As much as you're tired of hearing about Young and Byrnes, I'm tired of listening to people tell me the Cubs are a good team. They're not even as good as the '03 and '04 versions. It would be a shame to see such a mediocre team get to the World Series when far more deserving teams in their franchise's history have missed it.

2 on and 0 out. D-Backs have to take advantage of this.

I remember that woman, and I also remember listening to Steve Dahl on the radio the next day and hearing him comment "didn't you just want to SLAP her???!!!"

Well, back in Laughlin in December, I put $20 on the Cubs for my husband, $10 on the NLCS and $10 on the Series. If the Cubs win the NLCS, I pick up $90, and if they win the whole thing, $300. And you know what? I DON'T CARE! I'm still spending the money I won on the Sox in 2005, and seeing the Cubs win the WS is not worth it to me.

Thanks! As I said in another thread, Jim's doing fine. He really didn't expect them to win anyway. Last night, he wore his Sox WS T-shirt and a Cubs cap. He doesn't own any Cubs gear because he thinks the blue they sport is uglier than hell. (And he's right.)
