What grades would you give the Sox using the following "subjects"? Comments may be given at the end.

Offense: F
Pitching
-Starting: B-
-Relief: D-
Defense: D
Coaching: F
Overall: D-

There's not much good to be said for student "Sox." If not for some good starting pitchers and an extra effort toward the end of the season, there would be no way to avoid an "F."

Eh, what's the point? The Sox were bad, we get it.

If they must be graded, let's make it pass/fail.

The bullpen gets an F only because there is nothing lower then that. (And I'm talking about collectively...Jenks was the only one who was worth a damn.)

I give them an A for effort!

Except all the ones that didn't try very hard....well, there's some guys that get an A for effort!

KW = F
OG = D
Jenks = A-
Rest of bullpen = F-
Offense = D
Defense = C

The blame really lies with the management that put together a crappy bullpen that ultimately brought the whole team down.

Rotation:
Mark Buehrle: A-. Another 200 Inning year, ERA under 4 a no-hitter and a nice new deal.
Javier Vazquez: A. Made some big steps this year, if he can keep the home runs down, he'd be better.
Jon Garland: B-. Started and finished well, had that shoulder problem and problem with walks.
Jose Contreras: D. Good September saves him from an F.
John Danks: D+. Started out great, had his rookie struggles, but did not secure his spot in the rotation for next year.
Gavin Floyd: C-. Did much better in August and September, showed flashes.

Bullpen: Everyone else but Jenks gets an F----. Jenks gets an A+

I'll grade the offense later.

Lip

Absolutely. F minus minus for the bullpen. Jenks gets an A, but it doesn't do us any good if we can't make it through the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings. And an equally low grade for the KW's handling of putting together our bullpen for this season.

I give the coaching staff a D-. Lousy execution, lousy fundamentals, underperforming players almost totally across the board. Gooch underperforms for us and then zooms to a .300 hitter for the Phillies.....ouch, that's a real slap in the face to me.

I won't grade everyone, because my following the team waned in the 2nd have (no explanation needed)

Rotation: B (Good enough to win, not good enough to carry the team)
Beuhrle and Vazquez: A- (Pretty good and pretty consistent)
Garland: C (OK in the first half when they were still playing for something)
Contreras: F (Don't care if he improved in the second half, the games didn't matter)
Danks: C (see Garland)

Bullpen: a collective F (the crappiness was enough to overtake Bobby's A)

Offense: F (Dug the team into a hole that they couldn't climb out of)
Konerko: F (see Contreras)
Dye: F (see Contreras)
Thome: B (would have been an A if he had stayed healthy)
Pierzynski: C (OK year. nothing special.)
Uribe: F (I'm all for seeing Mr. Uribe replaced)
Fields: B (Get the average up and it will be an A)

I'd agree with all except :

Hall: C- for the effort of playing hurt all year
Richar: C- for hitting as well as he did coming up from AA. Also defensively, he could be better than Iguchi
Crede : F- for letting sleazeball agent talk him out of having surgery last offseason as the Sox suggested

For all the people saying the Bullpen gets an F other than Jenks... I think you are missing someone else worth noting, who I think deserves at least a B. One of the few good players this year, and capping off a pretty cool story in reaching the Majors.

Yup.

2.74 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 14/7 K/BB, and one of the best GO/AO numbers of any qualifying reliever in all of baseball (3.46), which is a big deal for pitching in the Cell. Plus he seemed to do very well in high pressure situations. And how many guys can you find with a delivery like that at 90 mph who still have good control?

I don't see how you could ask for any more than that from a rookie.

You can't - but that won't stop the WSI Resident Experts from trying.

I have no problem seeing Jenks, Wasserman, Logan or Thornton, Bukvich or Masset along with one of the future starters (Floyd, Gio or Broadway) and one or two FAs. I'm not writing off Aardsma or Sisco yet either.

We sucked last year - I get it. Our bullpen was the suckiest of the sucky. But that doesn't mean that we have to completely trash it. There are a lot of pieces might fit in nicely if we were to add one or two strong arms to what we have and if some of our guys develop.

You should hear how the Brewer fans refer to their bullpen. :D:

The bullpen was the most glaring weakness but to may be the easiest to address with some of the people in the organization.

I continue to worry about team speed and the failure to execute the fundamentals when trying to manufacture runs.

What Jab says is true and I very much hope it all works out.

Three straight seasons with an awful bullpen (the 2006 edition was bad also--not at the 07 level but still bad) and you risk losing the veterans on your team (i.e. basically them saying, 'what the hell is going on?')

And before you say 'that couldn't happen....' according to Ozzie it already did at least one time this season.

Team stuff:
Power: C, This was down for the whole year
On-base: F
Speed: C-, the young guys bump it up
Situational hitting: F---

Lineup:
Owens: B-. Played well after his call-up, still needs to learn.
Fields: C+. Has good power, needs to cut down on K's and find a position.
Thome: B. Only bright spot on offense. 500 Homers, injuries cost him.
Konerko: C. Everything was down for him.
Dye: C+. Early injury dragged him down, played better in the 2nd half.
Pierzynski: C-. Average and power dropped, defense wasn't great.
Gonzalez: F. Don't bother coming back.
Richar: C-. Showed flashes, needs more of it.
Uribe: F. Maddening like no one else.
Cintron: D-. Put in a tough spot with injuries and his ailing grandfather, couldn't cut it.
Podsednik: D. Couldn't stay healthy, probably will catch on for someone else.
Erstad: D. Did well early, the most grindy man in the world couldn't do much else.
Iguchi: C. Good luck in the playoffs.
Mackowiak: C-. No more center for him, also put in a tough spot because of injuries, good luck tonight.

Coaches:
Greg Walker: F. Approach is completely outdated, whole offense stunk.
Don Cooper: C+. Tough job with that bullpen, did whatever he could.
Harold Baines: C. ???
Razor Shines: B-. Did what he could, smart not to run into outs with all the slow guys.
Ozzie: D-. Too many bullpen mixups, couldn't ignite people. Needs to be him again.
KW: D. Resigning Buehrle and AJ saves him from an F.

Hawk: C. Entertaining as usual, still complains too much.
DJ: B+. Took some steps this year.
Rongey: A+. Had the toughest job for the Sox, dealing with the callers after every loss.
