View Full Version : Yankees and Red Sox - The final meeting

Fenway

The FOX and ESPN trucks have arrived.

Both teams are probably in with the Tigers the only team that can knock New York out now.

Still New York dreams of the division

Mike Lupica: As the Yankees take the field at Fenway Park this weekend, they get the last chance to extend their streak of winning the AL East. Yes, Yankees-Red Sox still has juice. ... more (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2007/09/14/2007-09-14_the_al_east_race_still_has_juice_and_so_.html)

Is this a preview of the ALCS? Everyone west of the Hudson wants Anaheim-Indians.

I'd love to see the Tigers get to the playoffs rather than the Yankees. Need a Boston sweep.

Make that two of us, but I would rather both teams just disappear off the Earth.

Out of respect for this series, I really think all other games should be cancelled and replayed after the regular season ends. The spotlight should be one these two teams, its good for baseball.

The only good to come out of the Yankees surge is that it will keep the Tigers out of the postseason. I'd rather the Mariners would make it as the wild card, but the team hasn't done a thing since Mike Hargrove was forced out as manager.

The Yankees won't win the division, but they seem to be headed for the wild card. I'm hoping, though, that the Angels make it to the ALCS.

I think they should play this game on every channel on television, broadcast it on every radio station, and even show it in movie theatres, replacing all movies for the whole weekend. Isn't that what America wants to see? When not showing games we can see previous Red Sox/Yankees games and also new episodes of Sox Appeal.

I'll be flipping over to the game tonight during the Sox game. I'll watch the start of it on Saturday (assuming Chicago gets that Fox game) and I'll watch the game Sunday night.

What's the problem?

Come on Yanks.

Agreed. As much as I dont like New York, I really have grown to despise the Boston Red Cubs and all that they stand for. Atleast the yanks admit they buy championships. Every year we get to listen to theo piss and moan about how they have the money to compete with the Yanks, then throw 100 mil at some Japanese Pitcher.

I'd like to see 4 no hitters thrown tonight along with 4 guys going 5-5 with 5 HR. Thome can get his 500th too. Then we can see what the lead baseball story on ESPN will be. They'd be so busy cutting into games.... wait, do you really think they'll cut in a Red Sox/Yankee game? For anything?

ESPN wouldn't cut into any game for a 500th home run. If Thome was goign to hit 756 tonight then they would do it.

I believe they did for Big Hurt. ARod absolutely... I was in a bar watching whatever game they had on and they cut to ARod pretty much anytime he did anything.

I think they should play this game on every channel on television, broadcast it on every radio station, and even show it in movie theatres, replacing all movies for the whole weekend. Isn't that what America wants to see? When not showing games we can see previous Red Sox/Yankees games and also new episodes of Sox Appeal.

Cueing throwing up guy in 3...2...1...

Well, you're ALMOST right.

I think every human being on the face of the earth should have some kind of chip implanted in his head. That way, anytime the Red Sawx and the Yanks tee it up, we will all be forced to witness the most important thing that has ever happened since time began.

I was hoping that for a while, but I've changed my mind recently with the Tigers chasing the Yankees for the wildcard. A bunch of my friends here are Tiger fans, and if they make the playoffs we'll have good gatherings to watch playoff games and eat Sir Pizza, but if the Tigers don't make it, the interest will go away and I'll watch the playoffs by myself on my couch. Last year was the first time any of my friends had been interested in the playoffs, and even though it was the Tigers they were going for, it was still kind of fun.

The Yankees have played the best baseball in MLB for 3 months now. Nobody wants to play them in October.

Screw the Yankees; screw the AL East...

Screw the Yankees; screw the AL East...

Despite your rants, Fenway is correct; New York is on fire right now.

Since August 1 (41 games) they are batting .291 with 65 HRs and 254 runs scored (over six a game). That is more than enough offense to make up for the pitching staff's 4.71 ERA over the same period. Hence, the 27-14 record.

I blame Francoma for last night. He decided he couldn't trust Gagne with a 3 run lead and went with Papelbon for an 6 out save.

Boston HAS to win today as I don't like the Schilling-Clemens matchup tomorrow night. If NYY sweeps the loss column is 2 with 2 weeks to play. NYY can play for the tie as they would win a tiebreaker for the division.

Let's see; three possible things I can do after my banjo lesson.

1) Watch the Red Sawx-Yanks game.
2) Clean the oven.
3) Clean the bathrooms.

Fens, I guarantee I'd do #2 and #3 ten times each before I'd do the first one once!

And what makes you so sure they won't switch at the last minute and have McCarver do D'Backs/Dodgers?

Let me add that--IMO--being tied to a chair and forced to watch a triple feature of Tremors 4, Children of the Corn V, and Major League: Back to the Minors over and over for a week would be much more entertaining than watching the Yanks and Red Sawx tee it up.

Absolutely. Of course, I'm biased.

However, its absolutely top 25 if not top 5. The damn pre-game concert became a #1 song!

I'd only moved down here a month before, and I rank my feelings that day just a little bit under being in the stands for WS games 1 and 2...

Ya know, I remember that I was actually very happy for the Red Sox fans in 2004. For me, it's not so much about whether the Yankees or Red Sox win or their stupid little rivalry as much as it is about the whole "Yanks and Red Sox are playing; everybody put your lives on hold" attitude that ESPN and Fox seem to have. I suspect this is true for others as well.

Once the two teams I care about (Sox, D'Backs) are out of contention, I pretty much no longer give a **** what happens the rest of the way--although I am always happy to see the Twins drop out, if for no other reason than the fact that they are a major pain in the ass.

Special Note to Fenway: one of my favorite folk songs--and the first one I taught myself on the banjo--is "MTA."

There was a thread on this when it was first reported that I'm too lazy to find. The dumbest thing about this wasn't the Red Sox at #1, or the Red Sox at both #1 and #15 (Buckner game), but no NFL story in the top 20, and the only story related to the NFL being the Simpson trial (#22, which many posters said shouldn't have been listed as a sports story). As I recall mentioning at the time, I don't know what country USA Today covers, but that list rather proves it isn't the United States of America . . .

I was shocked to see the Simpson trial on that list as well. If I were to limit this to strictly NFL stories, even including the entire history of the NFL, the Saints' return to the Superdome would rank in my personal Top 5. There's not much more that can top the importance of that.

Oh, and I'd say that the ONLY reason the '99 US Women's soccer team winning the World Cup even MADE this list was because of Brandi Chastain taking off her shirt after scoring the game-winning shot. Sex sells in our society, and the event wouldn't even have been remembered if it weren't for that.

Boston and New York brings out the nuts

Don't flatter yourself - or the region. I think the same thoughts about the Crubs. Death and destruction are great solutions to sports woes; so long as you confine them to Fantasy Land. ( Very important to keep that in mind. )

When you stop to think about it, the eastern media's fixation with NY. and B. isn't really all that different from the Chicago media's obsession with Notary Sojac Dame. And speaking of the Golden Doomers; how 'bout them Feigning Eyerashes? { This moniker dates from a famous incident, which I shall now proceed to relate in great detail. }

It all goes back to before the Big Game against St. Mary's Finishing School for Girls. So feared were the "Belles" of St. Mary's, that in the days leading up to this sure-to-be titanic struggle, player after player approached ND Coach Rocky Kanute, complaining of "pink eye". Pretty soon, the roster became so depleted that the "Leper Chaun's" were forced to forfeit. Later on, it came out that it had all been a giant hoax. Hence, forever the knickname, Feigning Eyerash. Somehow, this was eventually PR morphed into Fighting Irish; probably by the ancestors of those responsible for negotiating the current contract of Charlie "Muscle" Weis.

Believe it, or not!

Despite the Yankees taking two-of-three in Boston, the Red Sox can go 5-7 the rest of the way and be guaranteed a postseason spot, regardless of what any other team does. Throw in some Yankee losses and they can perform even worse.

Clemens bests Schill, barely (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/09/17/clemens_bests_schilling___barely)

Old hands at this big-game thing, veterans Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling did their level best for the Yankees and Red Sox last night. Simply sensational theater.

No shock, just awe, as Jeter produces for Yanks (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/09/17/no_shock_just_awe_as_jeter_produces)

What a ballplayer. It has been a dozen years and Joe Torre still shakes his head in appreciation and awe. Derek Jeter's three-run homer in the eighth inning enabled the Yankees to beat the Sox, 4-3.

and a NY reporter saves Papelbon
