In the Tribune today, Guillen says the Sox are looking for Gonzalez to be a backup next season at short and 1st base. Just what have the Sox braintrust seen in this guy this year to even consider a backup job? This doesnt bode well for next year.

This is dissapointing news :(:

I've not been pleased with his play, either.

Still, Cintron and Gonzalez won't bother me too much if the starting infield consists of Crede, Furcal, Richar and Paulie.

"Jack of all trades, master of none" is the phrase that comes to mind when these two are in the game.

Sure, they can "play anywhere", they just don't play well anywhere. I can't believe Cintron is still in the major leagues.

This indeed doesn't bode well for next year, if these two are being considered for the team.

It looks like the only reason the Sox traded Mackowiak and kept Cintron is nobody was dumb enough to ask for Cintron in trade. As long as you kept Rob out of CF, he was a fine backup.

What is with all the Furcal love? I've watched him play down here for years; and his defense is adequate at best, and his hitting is average. Granted, he's way better than Uribe, but then again, most shortstops are at this point.

Keeping Gonzalez in that role would be another reason to question the judgment of KW and OG. That guy should not be on any major league roster.

If we're going to win the Pedro Alvarez sweepstakes, we need Angel Gonzales out there every day. Along those lines, my ideal lineup for the month of September:

Owens CF
Gonzales 3B
Cintron 1B
Erstad RF
Podsednik LF
Uribe SS
Richar 2B
Hall C
Lucy DH

Kicking ass and taking names.

1. Switch hitter
2. His arm is the same as, if not better than Uribe's (However he does have less range and does have a lot of throwing errors)
3. He's fast

Gonzalez's ONLY positive attribute is his versatility. I can't envision a 2008 roster which has Cintron, Ozuna and Gonzalez on it. Maybe two of the three, but not all three.

Can't we just have Crede play both Short and 3B? He's capable of doing that right?

They cannot have that SOB anywhere near the 2008 roster. They cannot. Can they?:o:

God help us. Gonzalez might play multiple positions, but which position does he play well? And he can't hit a lick. I tolerate Ozuna's defensive woes because Pablo can hit. He has sparked our offense many, many times in the past. What does Gonzalez do well, either offensively or defensively? Anyone?

I'm very fearful that KW really believes this year is a fluke, and that we're not that far away from a return to contention. In reality, we need an overhaul.

I suspect most GMs and owners think that the fans really dont know squat about the game, but what are they seeing in Gonzalez that the fans are missing? Ive been a Sox fan for 54 years and watched a lot of games but I know Im not a baseball genius but I sure has hell can see that Gonzalez cant hit and is mediocre in the field.

If he sticks around as like the 25th man on the roster that ends up only playing 40 games a season, I'd be fine with it. But knowing Ozzie he'll put Gonzalez in at least 80.

This is where I hate Ozzie as our manager. Guys get in his dog house and never come out, and yet others who can "grind" Ozzie loves. Im not a huge BA fan anymore, but shouldn't Brian get a spot before Gonzalez.

If it was someone else who made 3 throwing errors in 1 inning that cost us a game, Ozzie would have chewed their ass out and we would probably have seen them DFA, but Gonzalez is one of Ozzie's boys. Im pretty sure if it was up to Ozzie, we would just have the central american national team plus Jenks taking the field for us next year.

I'll say this much. I don't see andy gonzalez having any part on a playoff team.

This is bad. We have to hope he somehow plays even worse for the rest of the month.

The Sun-Times today described Gonzalez as "versatile." Yeah, he's like the anti-Willie Harris.

Can we bring back Alan Bannister?

He made three throwing errors in a single inning. Is it possible for him to play worse?

This guy doesn't even deserve a spot on Widger's softball team. He'll end up being the worst player, that somehow still played 75+ MLB games in a season, ever.

As a human being, Gonzalez seems like a nice guy since he once got out of his car to sign an autograph for a co-worker's 10-year-old son. Granted, that autograph and $1 will get you a McChicken sandwich, but a kind gesture nonetheless.

As a player, he sucks. Can't throw (three errors in one inning?!), can't hit. Enjoy Charlotte in 2008. If there were an expansion draft coming up any time soon, he'd be the perfect guy.

Sure Andy is versatile...but so was Josh Paul right?

At best he's the 24th or 25th man on a decent team.

What kills me about this team is that we're in love with bench players who are "versatile", but all of our relief pitchers are "specialists". I would KILL for some relievers who can get both lefties and righties out.

How do you figure? He absoultey sucks on a horrid team right now.

Timo Perez would be a better back up first baseman than Andy Gonzalez

Andy is versatile in the same sense that Steve Lyons was versatile. They sucked at every position.

Perhaps Gonzalez can fall asleep in left field again next year.

My goodness, he has no business still being on the team this year much less being part of the 2008 plan.

Saw that - Gonazalez leaves a gaping hole at third (makes a good play every so often but botches most of the routine plays). :o:

That's the kicker here. There are no "bench guys" on Ozzie's team. He gives much more regular rest than necessary to the starters, he'll bench starters for lefty/righty matchups, and he likes to give his "bench guys" regular work so they stay fresh all year.

If AG is on this team next year I will be shocked. Watching him botch at least three routine plays last night at third, I asked myself, what exactly does he bring to the table. Apparently it's photographs of KW/OG in compromising positions. Seriously, though, could they be trying to hype this guy so that he can become a small piece of a trade over the winter?

Andy Gonzalez is has the such a high upside that he could match Manny Ramirez in production...at least according to insiders in the whitesox organization.

I hope last night was the last straw with the Gonzalez at 3B experiment.

Even Ozzie was embarrassed - enough to sub in Cintron.

I don't understand, we have a perfectly good third baseman playing in Left Field...

Because he's trying to learn the position so they can play both Fields AND Crede next year. Does that make it clearer?

Let him learn it in Charlotte.

Is Charlotte still playing? What does it matter now anyway?

Sending Fields back to the minors after the offense he put up this year is silly. Let him get his feet wet in LF and maybe the Sox have one less hole to fill next year.

I've seen enough downright bad defensive baseball this year, I sure as hell don't want to see more of the same next season.

He shouldn't even be on a AAA roster given his .242 BA at Charlotte. I don't understand why he was called up and how in the world did he stick?
