Minor league baseball set an attendance record for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year, drawing 900,000 more fans than last season.

As of Labor Day, the 175 minor league baseball clubs that charge admission attracted 42.6 million fans. The total will increase because the New York-Penn and Pioneer leagues wrap up their regular seasons Friday. The Northwest league finished Wednesday.

Yearly attendance up by nearly 4 million since 2004.

MLB is also on pace for another record year. It is on pace for over 79 million, a 6 million increase since 2004.

Since when does MLB stand for minor league baseball?

I didn't see the official at tendendance figure, but there seemed to be only about 1,300 people at the Modesto Nuts game Wednesday night in their California League playoff opener.

Minor league playoff games never draw well. School is back and other factors.

Minor league playoff games never draw well. School is back and other factors.

One reason minor league playoff games don't draw well is that no one knows exactly who will be playing in them until the last minute. There's no way to sell many, if any, advance tickets. Plus, so many people who go to minor league games these days have so little clue about who's actually playing.

The end result is that the only ones who bother going to the playoff games are the hardcore fans -- the ones who actually follow the local team's on-field activity and could care less about the dizzy bat race and all the other silly stunts that make up the atmosphere of the typical minor league game these days.

That's also why many minor league playoffs are short two-of-three game affairs that are meant to be completed as quickly as possible after Labor Day.

Trenton which sells out all summer only had 3,556 last night for a playoff game with Portland.
