The Orioles have traded RHP STEVE TRACHSEL to the Chicago Cubs for 3B SCOTT MOORE and RHP ROCKY CHERRY.

Trachsel, 36, went 6-8 with a 4.48 ERA (140.2IP, 70ER) in 25 starts for the Orioles this season. He allowed 3 earned runs or less in 17 of his 25 starts and missed 3 weeks while on the disabled list with a strained gluteus muscle. Trachsel was signed by the Orioles as a free agent on February 14, one day before pitchers and catchers reported to camp.

me thinks the Boston Globe cut and pasted the Orioles press release

Wow...he came up with the Cubs as I recall and is one of the SLOWEST pitchers I ever saw. I don't know what the hell he will contribute to them.

The same Steve Trachsel who gave up McGwire's 62nd?

Slow, long games? Brilliant business move by the Tribune Corp. More time to sell beer.

He's going to be the long relief guy.

Looks like he'll be getting a lot of work in September. Outside of Hill, that staff sucks right now.

What's got to be scary for Lou (and why Trachsel got picked up) is how short the starts he's getting are. The last time their starters went more than 7:
Zambrano - July 29
Lilly - Aug 4
Marquis - July 20
Hill - July 16 (though to be fair, 4 of his last 6 starts he did go 7)
Marshall - June 13

And when you look at the gamelogs its not like, outside of Hill, there are a lot of 7 inning starts in there even. Lots of 5.1, 5.2, 6.1 sort of starts. They're going to have to call up every decent arm they can and hope for the best in September.

When I think Tracshel, I think "The Human Rain Delay". I remember when the D-Rays had BOTH Trachsel and Nomo in their rotation. The two of them were guaranteed 4 hr games when they started.

What is more scary is that they gave up a MLB ready reliever in Cherry, and a major league hitter in Moore, for a sixth starter?

I guess Andy MacPhail had to get one good shot in at his old employer, and employee.....

Yeah, the O's got a pretty good haul for such a non-factor.

Per Orioles announcer Gary Thorne, Moore starts at 3B right away in tommorrow's game against the BoSox.

I love how the media makes it sound like this move has put them over the top....Umm....he sucked when he was with the cubs before and hasnt had an ERA under 4 since 2001...

When I was looking at Tuesday's scheduled starters (no baseball today -- no White Sox baseball anyway), I was surprised to see Trachsel scheduled to start for the Cubs.

Now they are skipping Sean Marshall, who has done well, so Trachsel can start. Dumb move, IMO. Since when do you fix what's not broken?

I heard Stone on the Score being critical of the Trachsel move. Apparently, old Trachsel is a career 33W-38L at Wrigley Field with a high E.R.A. He went on to say that he is a high fastball pitcher which usually doesn't fit well at Wrigley.

You know the Cubs...they're not afraid to sacrifice the future for the present, even if they have multiple holes to fill to go where they want to go.
