The Cubs have just received the final piece of the puzzle. They now have their very own Geoff Blum.

Well, he will definitely hit some homers there. Not sure how much playing time he'll get though, especially if Soriano is back in a couple weeks.

Monroe is a real good pickup for any NL team. He could put up all star numbers with a full season there.

Craig Monroe and All-Star should never be used in the same sentence.

Oh wait, crap.

Whoa. That really sucks. I thought the Cubs were going to stand pat.
Hopefully Hendry gave up something for him, unlike some of his other deals.

I guess a choke is the best we can hope for now.

Well it couldn't be much since the Tigers had DFA'd him to call up Maybin last week.

I hate to say it but this could be a good move for the Cubs. The pitching is certainly inferior in the NL Central and Wrigley and Comerica Park are about as opposite as you can get as far as hitting HRs go. It certainly favors a free swinging slugger like Monroe.

The Cubs need more outfielders.

Well considering Monroe is almost a dead pull hitter, he hits all his balls to left, Comerica's and Wrigley's left field lines are not that far apart.

Good move for the Cubs, they needed help against left-handed pitching and got a guy that was hitting .302 against LHP. And some of those fly balls that went to the track at Comerica park can go into the bleachers at Wrigley. They should be able to platoon him and Cliff Floyd in Right field.

As long as they don't need him to hit RHP, they are fine...

I assume he will strictly platoon against left handed pitching. They needed a right handed power bat. Dye would've been a better solution, but I guess this works.

Damn.

Why? Did you want the Sox to get him, or the cubs not to?

Basically, it's a case of WGAS, as in 'Who Gives A .......'

For Craig Monroe? Be realistic...the guy isn't very good, and never has been.

Not only would Pie and Cedeno both have to clear waivers (not going to happen), no one trades young major league talent for ****.

Yes, he's one of those guys that kills us and sucks elsewhere. I guess the Flubs do need the power, but Monroe is all or nothing.

No, I didn't want him on the Sox. Regardless of him being the 6th outfielder on the Cubs, anything to remotely make them stronger gets a "damn"

If Williams had traded him for a player to be named later, people here would be saying he could have gotten Marmol in return.

I see your point, but all he does is add another mediocre player to a mostly mediocre OF situation.

The way I see it:

Floyd+Murton+Jones+Pie+Pagan+Monroe < Pods

That could mean the deal was completed with a player who will be announced when waivers are not an issue. It also could be a sort of future consideration depending on Monroe's value to the Cubs (unless my understanding of the rules are out of date).

Monroe was a step away from being released. The Cubs agreed to a consideration to guarantee that they could get him without having to bid with one or more teams. It's not a major deal.

Leyland said it's a LH pitcher who is on the roster. The Detroit News speculted Clay Rapada.

Refresh my memory here Mike, that Monroe quote from last year sounds familiar but I can't remember the circumstances surrounding it.

When Monroe hit a grand slam off Vazquez last summer on 7/19/06, Monroe bumped into A.J. when he stepped on home plate. The media asked A.J. and Monroe after the game what the words were exchanged and Monroe just said he apologized to A.J. for bumping into him, and A.J. confirmed that.

The next day, Monroe back peddled and said he never apologized to A.J. when he bumped into him at the plate.
