someone had to start this...what are the odds tonight's game is played?

russ99
08-20-2007, 03:10 PM
I'm going with 70% that they'll get this one in.

From most weather sites, it's gonna clear up a bit in a few hours with spotty rain and then a big storm again around midnight.

Plus Buerhle's pitching. I hope they start on time - I have a work outing of 17 people going tonight, and I just know they'll reschedule for a day game if they don't play tonight, which means none of us get to see the make-up... :(:

Anyone heard anything about the weather for the 8/23 game? Weather Channel and all the radar websites have huge green blobs rolling in at about 7 and continuing scattered throughout the evening.

Hope the game is played, but if they postpone it, I hope they announce it before 7!

That wave on the radar looks NASTY. They will probably wait it out as long as possible seeing as we are getting down towards the end of the season and reschedule dates are getting harder and harder to come by. Be prepared to wait a while before a decision is made.

Well, if they canceled that Saturday game in May against the Devil Rays, they'll cancel anything.

Maybe a late start tonight though. The Red Sox will probably ***** about canceling a game in fears of the Yankees gaining a half game and the start time wouldn't be until 10pm.

I was walking to a friend's house from school. In a matter of about 10 seconds, it went from sunny to chaos in the skies. Rain and leaves were swirling at huge speeds. It took us about 2 or 3 minutes at full speed to get to the closest stores. Some stores were empty, like the matress store, US Cellular was holding the door shut, and GameStop was locked. One kid ran ahead of us earlier to Wendy's and they refused to let him in!

After we couldn't get anywhere in the strip mall, we ran across the parking lot to Target, where they took us to the back room. They were really nice to us; they saw us all soaked and after the sirens stopped they gave us a free fountain drink. Overall, it was a really intense, but very exciting experience.

Thankfully I was at work until 5, because it was raining sideways for about an hour here (Highland Park). My friend and I made the decision not to drive down tonight, as there's too much of a risk on the traffic-laden highways (my friend's sister was driving home on the Edens and nearly avoided a huge crash which would've involved her car, a semi, and a fallen tree). It's just not worth it.

Reporting from just 1 mile northwest of the ballpark, it's pouring out there with intermittant lightning. After the second wave, it indeed looked clear to the west. More storms popped up though. I wouldn't say it was "obvious" it would be canceled. They really wanted to get it in to avoid broadcast rules this weekend and a DH the day after. Looks like they chose the lesser of two evils.

Pardon my ignorance, but FOX broadcast rules don't seem to stop teams like the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Cubs from regularly starting Saturday games at noon local time. Why wouldn't the Sox be able to do the same thing by playing tonight's makeup at noon on Saturday instead of scheduling a double header on a weekday when many won't be able to get out of work? Not to mention tomorrow's forecast makes it look doubtful they'll get both games in...

Friday's forecast calls for quite a bit more rain, causing the White Sox (56-70) to slightly alter their rotation for the doubleheader. Jon Garland (8-9, 4.84) opposes Josh Beckett (15-5) in the opener, followed by John Danks (6-11, 5.30) and Curt Schilling (7-5, 4.25) in the nightcap.

I don't know if it is sad or not, but if I was there, I think I would have stayed. I really like the park, and sometimes you just don't get enough time to hang around and enjoy the place a bit. Unless you get there early, you rush in, sit in your seat, watch the game and don't leave your seat, and then leave quickly to beat the traffic. Sometimes you just need some down time to absorb the park. I don't know if that makes any sense.

Unless you get there early, you rush in, sit in your seat, watch the game and don't leave your seat, and then leave quickly to beat the traffic. Sometimes you just need some down time to absorb the park. I don't know if that makes any sense.

It does, actually. It was the same way with old Comiskey. Rain delays provided a great excuse to roam the bowels - ( not referring to the men's room! ) - of the park and just soak ~ you should pardon the expression ~ in the atmosphere. That's how I first discovered the lime stalactites.*

Clearing out the park and parking lots takes quite some time.

They don't have to if you have a regular DH instead of this day/night crap.

Today looks pretty sketchy too.

I wonder if they'll get even one game in today? At least we can do makeups over the weekend.

I have tickets for tonight in the Terrace Suites with the NIU Alumni Association and for tomorrow with another message board pregame tailgate. I hope they both get in. Anyone have a rosary? I need to pray for these storms to dissipate.

They still do them if the games aren't popular ones and if there is room to make up the tickets, but not for a series as popular as this one. The Sox aren't going to intentionally give back 35K seats this late in the season.

I just looked at the extended Midwest doppler radar, and the huge storm that's over central Missouri right now looks like it's headed in our direction. It has a pretty sharp northeast directional path. This could get interesting.

Exactly. That's a $1 Million difference.
