View Full Version : Is Thome going to get to 500 this year?

JermaineDye05

right now he's been stuck on 490 for some time now and has looked pretty bad at the plate lately, he's got just over a month left in the season and still needs 10 to get there. Will he make it to 500 before the seasons end or just fall short?

AJ Hellraiser
08-18-2007, 03:47 PM
he'll fall just short... for Sox fans this could really suck because if he gets moved in the off-season we won't see him hit 500 in a Sox uni.... we also got robbed of seeing Frank Thomas hit 500 in a sox uni.... therefore, it's quite possible that no player will have ever hit 500 in a Sox uni

No way he gets 10 more HR's this year.

IF he gets and stays healthy, IF he sees alot of righties, IF he ever gets his swing back, IF he gets pitches he can hit, IF the 1&2 hitters get on alot, then maybe he can. But I doubt it.

I say no because he is not even getting walks. However, IF Jim can quickly turn it around, say no later than this road trip, then YES. I am leaning toward NO, however. I truly hope he proves me WRONG.

10 more for the rest of the year is equivilent of a 40 HR season, so it's certinally possible for someone like Thome (or hell, any 400+ HR hitter).

Actually, 3 chances: slim, fat and none. But it is possible, I could be wrong.

A nice catch, for sure. Thome will have to go on a tear (as far as this year is concerned) to get to 500 this season, IMHO.

Well, at least its something to watch down the stretch.

Man, this season just is awful. But at least we're seeing some fun on the Southside.

Now, if they can get Jenks into today's game to go for #42.

On the one hand, I'd like to see him do it this year; it would be one of a very few high points of the season. On the other hand, if he does it, I will not remember 2007 as the year Thome hit 500; I will remember it as an abomination.

Don't forget Buehrle's no-hitter and Jenks' record.

ESPN's player page:

...has him projected for 8 more HRs, putting him at 500 exactly. I think their projections are based on simple math (how many games he plays, how many are left, etc.)

I don't know... I almost want him to save it for 2008. This season is such a mess, it almost feels a bit tainted. Start 2008 off with a bang!

If Thome hits his 500th for another team, that will really burn. Really bummed that Toronto got the freebie celebration this year. Allthough IIRC, not many people saw Thomas' 500th.
My prediction, Big Jim does it Sep 30 vs the Ligers at USCF. Just like Paulie waited until the last day of the '05 season drive in his 100th RBI.

Thome tends to hit his HRs in bunches so he still has a shot for 500. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if he ended the season at 498 or 499 and then got it next year in the first homestand of the season. 500 HRs is something special and I'd hate for it to happen in a meaningless stretch drive in this dismal '07 season.

Exactly

I don't give a **** about thome's 500th. To me, he's basically Al Belle. (and the Alomars and Lofton)

If KW signs Vizquel next year then he'll be on the list too.

That's not the worst idea in the world. He has the highest OBP on the team. Then, give him the protection of Paulie, Dye, AJ and Fields in order behind him. Then have Owens, Richar and Pods 6-7-8. Let those speedsters hit together so they can practice getting on base, stealing, double stealing and hitting and running. Have Uribe hit ninth. He hardly every gets on base anyway, and he's not a huge threat to steal.

Am I the only one who's just not very excited about this? Thome's a good guy and all, but he hit the vast majority of his homers elsewhere, so I don't see this as any kind of Sox accomplishment. I'm happy for him, but it doesn't do much for me.

Does this mean you weren't happy when Tom Seaver won his 300th game?Yeah. It didn't mean much at all to me. Is Seaver wearing a Sox hat on his HOF plaque? Will Thome? No, and the reason is because they did the vast majority of their career accomplishments elsewhere.

Understand, I don't have any negative feelings about it, just no excitement.

I think it would be fitting if he hit it against the Indians - we do have 6 more games against them.

I was hoping that I could see him hit it when I was in the stadium - that would be cool since the only significant thing I have seen in person is Buherle's 100th victory and a walk off World Series victory.

Thome will get there hopefully before game 162
i can handle another pressire situation for a mile stone or record like with Jenks geting 42 outs or buerhle's no hitter.

The season is lost but BIG Jim will come through for the Sox faithful.

I think Thome getting his 500th HR while the Sox finish 20 below .500 would be appropriate for this season. It is the polar opposite of what made the Sox the best TEAM in baseball in 2005. Don't get me wrong, I like Thome a lot and he has contributed positively in a statistical sense. But I can't help thinking that the Rowand for Thome trade was what made Uribe and Iguchi, to name the most tragic two, decide their future was in hitting for power. And the rest is best-to-worst history.

Here's a theory (not original, I'm sure): The basic reason the Cubs have been perennial losers is that they have played in a park where the lure of the HR is irresistible. Sadly, so now do the Sox.
