Just to make sure Seattle's pitchers meant 'stupid' as in 'awesome, amazing, outstanding.'

They weren't belittling it by any means.

What the hell is stupid about it?

I was going to cheer for the Mariners to win the Wild Card, but now both their team and their fans (after reading some of their dumbass comments on USS Mariner, I have zero respect for M's fans) have soured on me. Go Yankees!

Did you even read the article?

If you'd call it an article, yes, I did. Whatever 'stupid in a good way' means.

He said stupid, then added "in a good way". It sort of means mind boggling the way he was using it - not dumb.

Nowadays "sick' means good, maybe Putz was thinking that.

Maybe he was confusing "sick" as in great and "bad" as in good and came up with "stupid."

If they said Jenks was a baaaad pitcher, would you think they actually meant horrible?

It's just more of the "reverse the meaning and sound cool" that is common to slang definitions.

The streak is definitely ridiculous and I definitely mean that in a good way...

Well some people use the phrase "stupid good" or "crazy good". It all means the same thing.

Who cares what they think, Bobby has been incredible over the last month or so, better than anyone else in the recent history of the game has been, Appreciate the streak for what is and will be and appreaicate that Bobby is an incredible asset to this team. I was there today and it made a bad game somewhat worthwhile.
Lets build on a guy like Booby!
Go Boobby J!!!!!!!!!!!!!

According to UrbanDictionary.com, my main source for all definitions:

Used to express astonishment. Replaces words such as dope, ill, sick, or steezy.

Hell, I'm ancient, and even I know that "stupid" used in that context is a high compliment.

Yah with the group here, Putz calling it stupid is in the same light as Hawk referring to him as Bad Bobby Jenks. Hawk doesn't mean bad like Jamie Navarro bad, he means bad like SHAFT bad.

"That Michael Jordan is so phony!"

Oddly enough, some years after Lee Arenberg said that line in 1992, many people around the country came to believe that Michael Jordan really was phony. Such is the fickle nature of sports celebrity.

Baseball players have been attaching an alternate meaning to "stupid" for some years. It's common for them to the gains from obscenely large contracts -- with the sort of money players might need if they wanted to finance a South American military revolution -- as "stupid money." It may have started out as a comment on the stupidity of the owners for doling it out before taking on its current connotation.
