Don't think we'll be seeing Day back in Chicago anytime soon.

Lucy seems to be progressing as a hitter. How is his defense and his handling of pitchers? Might he be a capable MLB backup by 2009? It sure would be nice to have a home-grown catcher on the team.

Sox considered Lucy the best defensive catcher in the 2004 draft. We'll see how he hits, but the other parts of his game are considered strong.

Very strong defensively. Quick feet, nimble behind the plate. Not wide, more like a Mauer-like build. Good arm and release. Not an Ivan Rodriquez arm, but better than AJ/Hall by a nice margin.

Calls a good game and the pitchers at every stop I have heard from all loved throwing to him.

At the worst, I think he'll be a good back-up catcher. In the lower levels I thought his bat looked a tick slow, but he has hit well 2 levels up from where I saw him, so I hope he has improved there.

Just to add some stuff about Lucy defensively...

He excels at throwing out runners. This year, he has thrown out close to half the attempted base stealers, which is a lot better than we are seeing from either of our MLB players (though obviously at a different level). And he continues to improve on this. To start the year, the first 14 guys trying to steal on him all succeeded. Since then, he's thrown out half.

Also, there was an article a while back about Lucy, talking about how he is really good at handling his pitchers. They all seem to love pitching to him. That right there is a skill that is huge for a catcher, but is very hard to measure statistically. He seems to have that gift.

Combine those things with a bat which improves each year, a guy who can take a walk (.347 OBP at B-Ham before call-up), and steal a few bases (14 of 15 so far), and I'd say he has a shot to be at least a backup, maybe a starter.
