The grand jury investigating Barry Bonds has been extended for another six months, several sources familiar with the government's case have told the Daily News, and the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco is confident it will have enough evidence to secure an indictment once it resumes in September.

"They seem to feel they have a strong case," said one source, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Another source said he believed prosecutors could secure an indictment if they sought one now, but that they would rather take the additional time to strengthen it.

"I think politically it would look terrible if they indicted him when he was one or two home runs away from breaking the record," one attorney with knowledge of the government's case said. "I think they'll let him break the record but I'd be very surprised if they don't indict."

Damn, indict his ass now or as he's rounding 3rd base on 756.

I'm a fan of the beautiful game, but the thought of that being the least-screwed up sport (especially in other countries where it matters more) makes me:

In Italy something like half the teams are not allowed to sell regular tickets to fans ( just club seating ) because of safety issues

Italy (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/italy/index.html?inline=nyt-geo) announced on Thursday a novel compromise between this nationís love of soccer and violence at games: Matches can resume this weekend, a week after a police officer was killed at a riotous match in Sicily, but most can be played only if the stadiums are empty of spectators.

Here's an idea taken from Rick Reilly's column this week on what to do once he hits 756:
Get Bonds's autograph at the ballpark - on the bottom of an affidavit that reads, I set this record with the help of performance-enhancing drugs. I am a very large jerk for doing so.

Hehe, I agree. Can you imagine if they actually pulled something when he was one homer shy of tying Aaron.

Bonds has quite the uber-aggressive attorney...

"I'll outmaneuver them at every turn," Rains told the newspaper Saturday night. "I've kicked their ass in private, I'll continue to kick their ass in public."

That public statement is definitely on 'roids. :D:

All the more reason for Bonds to be intentionally walked for the rest of the year.

Why waste 4 pitches when you can do it in 1? He's got enough armor on.......

I have this picture in my head of Bonds trotting down the 3rd base line... confetti in the air... and three federal agents in dark suits and sunglasses standing at home plate waiting to serve him... :D:

I'll go even farther. As he hits the record homer, a FBI sniper in the lightower at AT&T park shoots the ball out of the air. Suddenly, the left field entrance opens, three black tinted SUV's pull up, they grab Bonds, and we never see or hear of him again. Any inquiries into his disappearance is met with a:

"Barry Bonds? We have no knowledge of a Barry Bonds."

That's pretty much what I'm hoping and praying for. That, or just after the national anthem before one of the games (in San Francisco), several federal agents stroll out to left field, read him his rights, and take him off the field in handcuffs. I wanna see him do the perp walk, in front of all those idiots in San Francisco. With Bud Selig and other MLB bigshots in attendance, standing there with mouths agape, looking even more stupid than he normally does.

I'm envisioning a Ditka-like scenario (the clip of him taking out the fan running onto the field). Barry hits 756, rounds 3d, and agents jump out of the stands, clothesline him halfway home, handcuff him, and take him away -specifically walking AROUND home plate so he can't touch it.

Actually, it'd be better if it happened on #755. That way he ends up at 754 and Hank's still the champ (pending ARod).
