The Pirates have made no secret former Jim Tracey favorite Ceaser Izturis will be taking over full time at short after Wilson got into it the Pirates pitching coach. He is one of few SS who probably has a better glove than Uribe, and he has a better chance of being a .270-.300 hitter. He has little power, and doesn't walk at a great clip (career .264 hitter with a .306 OBP) BUT what he is excellent at is getting the ball in play, moving runners over, and he has NEVER struck out 100 times in a season.

One thing to note about the strikeout total, in roughly 3600 career abs, he has struck out 441 times. Uribe, in 2900 career ABs has struck out 556 times. So basically Wilson strikes out one in ever 8 and a half at bats where Uribe K's 1 in every 5 at bats. Wilson won't give us 20 homers, probably not even 10, but he will be a much more fundamentally sound hitter in who can get guys over for the top of the order. Wilson is basically the ideal 9 hitter who we can probably get cheap and won't cost us anymore than Uribe (he makes a little over 5, which is what Uribe's option for next year is IIRC).

That wouldn't leave any room for A-Rod.

Jack Wilson is not worth $6.5 million next season.

And there lies the caveat. If the Pirates will eat half of his pay (:o:), then why not? He can't be worse than Uribe.

Isn't he really old too? The Sox need more youth on the team. Not more Contreras type guys.

It looks like Pitt might be trying to trade Jack Wilson. Anyone think he would be an improvement over Uribe. I dont know that much about him but his stats arent bad.

Sign me up for the Jack Wilson Fan Club! He would be a good addition. Uribe's never been the same since he dove into the stands during WS 2005....darn Astros box seats.

The interesting thing about Uribe is that I heard how serious he took the offseason in terms of getting in shape - and I saw him the first day of spring training and he looked like his fat self. Couldnt figure that one out.

I really wish Getz didnt get hurt. He has played, and is capable of playing SS. He has the range, and he had a pretty nice arm from what I saw in ST. He was also tearing up the Southern league before he got injured. Any updates on him? Wasnt it called an ankle injury. Him next Richar as a sort of open tryout to see if one could handle an every day SS role would have been ideal.

Oh, and I wouldnt touch Wilson with a 10 foot pole. He isn't very good.

Let's aim our sights a tad higher.

Didnt Josh Fields play some short in the minors? Why dont we throw him over there and see what he can do

I guess he was just playing short for a few games because of gonzalez being called up? I just remember reading about it, didnt know if they were giving him a shot there or not

Because he can barely play third. Fields played shortstop in Charlotte under emergency circumstances.

A better glove than the 2005 version of Uribe?

If the Pirates eat part of his salary then absolutely I want Jack Wilson at SS.

...and who exactly would we have to give up to get him? Since we're not the Cubs, I'm assuming the Pirates aren't going to give him away for nothing.

Juan Uribe minus power plus more money = Jack Wilson.

What's the point of that?

You're probably right that it doesn't make sense baseball wise. However, I'm so fed up with Uribe, I wouldn't be against this move. Hell, I'd be for Dye at short right now. :o: Ok, that's a stretch, but I just want Uribe off the team.

I would like to see Uribe replaced, but Jack Wilson is not a significant upgrade. If he's an upgrade at all.

This guy lost his job with the Pirates. Do you think he's a championship level player?

In my opinion Wilson is the ideal 9 hitter. 2005 Uribe does not exist anymore. He is a fat lazy unmotivated ball player. His OBP is low, but his average is about 40 points higher then Uribe and he can move runners over. I agree that for 6 mil you pass but if you can get him for say, 3 with pitt paying half, its a good deal. The biggest thing about Wilson is his ability to get balls in play. He has never, NEVER struck out 100 times in a year (which is including a year he got over 650 abs). You are talking about a guy who with no outs can move a runner over for the top of the lineup, can put balls in play with guys in scoring position. 260 average .310 obp low strikeouts and great D makes an idea 9 hitter to me. He is also a very good base runner. Not really fast, but knows how to run the bases. If you can't see the upgrade over Uribe here you are nuts. You don't need a 9 hitter to hit 23 home runs and hit .220-.230. Uribe is a rally killer, Wilson can keep a rally going.

You pretty much summed up my thinking. If he isn't good enough for the lowly Pirates in the lowly NL Central and they think so low of him to replace him with the lowly Cesar Izturis, how does this make the Sox better? Jack Wilson is not an upgrade over Uribe. We would essentially be getting someone else's overpriced problem player. I was in Pittsburgh for the Sox/Pirates series and spoke at length with some of the fans there about their team. All of them hated Jack Wilson. They can't believe how much money they are paying him for such little production.

The guy is hitting .254 with 4HRs and 24 RBI in the crappy NL Central this year. How is this an upgrade over Uribe? I realize people are frustrated with Uribe but if we are going to replace him, let's shoot a bit higher than Jack Wilson.
