Just wondered thoughts on the Sox doing somekind of countdown to 500 for Big Jim. Toronto had a nice manual countdown for Frank that folks would slide in the new numbers from a fixture in the upper level.

I'd be kind of nice to see something like that done.

Sounds like a good idea, especially when he gets in upper 490s.

In his short time with the club so far, he has become one of my all time favorites. You never hear a bad thing about him. And Jesus can he hit a baseball or what?? Go Jim!!!! :bandance::gulp:

Can we also have a countdown to his 2,000 strikeout? That's a more exclusive club than 500 HRs.

Count me in as a fan of this idea. I've always been a fan of Jim's even while he was with the Indians. (hated it when he killed the Sox though)

My User ID and signature say it all.

Yea, it's going to be a close race for him between those two numbers. I don't really count the strikeouts against that much though.

He walks or hits a homerun more times than he strikes out.

He's having a pretty good year despite missing some time, and by all accounts he's a great clubhouse guy.

I just want to see him have 1-2 yr. more good years so we have a chance to get him a ring next year.

Reggie Jackson, Sammy Sosa and Andres Galarraga -- exclusive company indeed.

When I was a kid, Mickey Mantle (536 home runs) was the all-time strikeout leader, and the question was whether Harmon Killebrew (573 home runs) would catch up to him. He didn't, but 13 other players passed Killebrew and Mantle. If you combine Mantle's career 1,710 strikeouts with Ted Williams' (521 home runs) 709 strikeouts, you're still nearly 200 strikeouts (roughly the career of Nellie Fox) from Reggie Jackson's (563 home runs) record of 2,597 strikeouts.

If people cared about strikeouts these days, they wouldn't be digging the long ball.

I hope they have something cool planned for the occasion once it nears. It's been great watching Thome hit home runs for the Sox now.

It's close.

Walks (1419) + HRs (487) = 1906
Strikeouts - 1973

Brooks emailed me back saying its a safe bet that there will be a display up by the next homestand,..

possibly hanging from the fundementals deck would be my thinking.

Oops, you're right. I just looked at the past few seasons, didn't look at career totals for some reason.

Why do you feel the need to put a negative aspect into something positive? Are you that miserable that you feel the need to add this?:?:

I'm sure we will have some type of countdown for Big Jim and I hope I am there to see 500!

Nothing negative about it. It's just another milestone, like Bobby Cox breaking the record for most times tossed. Why does my comment even bother you?

Will ESPN acknowledge the hype, or at least acknowledge it when he reaches 500?

That will depend on if Barry Bonds Hit a Home Run that day.

ESPN did mention Thome when talking about milestones that could be reached in the 2nd half.

Based on the now defunct poll that was up on espn.com earlier today, the Chicago White Sox don't exist according to them, so I wouldn't hold my breath for that one!
