People knock the White Sox's policy regarding pitchers all the time, but it really came in handy here. 4 years for a pitcher of Mark's quality is amazing as Jason Schmidt and Barry Zito will be stealing money for years.

The fact that Mark was signed doesn't make your statement true. Nor does it make all the "wait and see" comments true. Its just as likely all the pro-Mark activity from the fan base made them reconsider their options.

I almost missed it, I was on the Bulls thread, and my wife was dozing on the couch and I heard Harrelson say they had signed MB.

I quickly went into the living room in time to see the scoreboard sign flash the news. Outstanding.

1. Kudos to MB. He took what is almost certainly a significantly less amount of money to stay with this organization. That doesn't happen to often anymore in pro sports.

2. Kudos to KW. There were times when I thought that he was being too stubborn and should have just signed the deal. Regardless of what actually went on, the deal got done. I do apologize for all the comments I made calling him an idiot, but I will also say that I usually qualified those and said "i don't know if the stories are true, but if he indeed is being to stubborn than he's an idiot".

Olney wasn't wrong, he got the information from Buehrle's agent. The only thing was, that offer likely happened 2, 3, 4 days ago...not last night.

It IS interesting that even with all the reporters following this and all their supposed "sources," none of them saw this afternoon's announcement coming. Most were predicting Buehrle's departure in this morning's papers.

Whether they were relying on old information or bad information, the end result is that the press corps was completely surprised this afternoon. And for all the media's "well-placed major league sources," the announcement didn't leak out before the Sox flashed it on the scoreboard for all to see.

IlliniSox4Life
07-08-2007, 04:58 PM
It "could be" 5 years 75 million if he is traded? So is that a 5th year at 19 mil?

Interesting. I wonder if it's something like, Buehrle gets to pick X amount of teams he doesn't want to go to, and if he's traded there its 19 million, and then he gets to pick X more, and if he's traded there it's 17 million.

I'm so glad we both agree and we're both right! Now, we just have to come to an agreement on BA, PK and Vazquez.

In all honesty, I would not be surprised if PK quietly approached KW and/or JR and lobbied on Mark's behalf. Clearly PK's quotes in the media - about Buehrle having "guts" (balls) and that it was imperative for the Sox to keep him - helped lubricate the situation. In any case, kudos to PK! Now I'll stop arguing that he should be traded; he's proven that he deserves to be the captain.

Well, it appears he doesn't have a No-Trade Clause. According to ESPN, he has an "escalator" clause that would drive up the value of the contract IF he is traded...interesting.

I guess that means Buehrle is going to be in a Sox uniform for the time-being, but we can't say that he will definetely be here all four years. Oh well, I suppose this was the best possible outcome of a difficult situation.

Buehrle, Garland, Vazquez, and Danks is a very good front four.

Buehrle signing obviously is great news, and I considered it more likely than not, despite the media reports. I expect there to be little difference between what the Sox could get for Buehrle and what they could get for Contreras, particularly because Contreras was at his best pitching in October. I think it could be a good move to trade him.

If the Sox don't trade Contreras, it might not be such a bad idea to move him to the bullpen. Keeping Floyd in the rotation and leaving him there would get more support, of course, if he were Anderson or Sweeney.

It will be very interesting to see the deals that all the other free agent SPs get this offseason, and we can really evaluate how good of a deal this was. I also wonder if Buehrle signing this will have an effect like the "market correction" KW is always talking about.

Great now we have to hear Buehrle to St. Louis rumors when this new contract runs out for another 5 years...

JK.... This is great great news! The core of this team is not intact...

With a solid-to-outstanding rotation in place next year the rebuilding process could be rather quick and painless!

KW, MB, Uncle Jerry= :supernana::):supernana::):supernana:

As many bad things as have been said lately about the White Sox this is now 2 key players that have taken less money to stay... meaning not only do they love it here but they are quality people

I'm sorry for calling KW a heartless fool. This day is too good to be true. Mark is a guy that is loyal to his fans and doesn't play for the money. I'm very happy he's still here! Let's hope this starts a great 2nd half run for the Sox.:bandance:

Here's hoping MB throws more no-hitters on the Southside.:gulp:

Best news all year! This was the right move for everyone. Signing MB will be an epochal good move (or an epoch-extending one).

I have had a theory that the collapse last year was precipitated by Buehrle's turning down the Sox offer and apparently heading for free agency. Maybe one year later we can continue where we left off at the break in 2006 and forget the year in between even though it ruined two seasons.

I like the bones of this team again, suddenly. Dye and Contreras will go, and maybe Iguchi, though I would like to see him stay. I hope Crede comes back after having been extended by the Sox, and Fields can take over in left. Get a leadoff center fielder and some bullpen and we're back! I hope this signing has the same effect on the team's energy level that it has on mine!

I can honestly say I thought he was a goner. I thought the Trib had a great article today (Downey) about how the Sox would lose a lot of fan credibility that they have rebuilt over the last few years. Letting MB go would have felt like another White Flag deal that would have taken years to recover from..

Build around him! We have a solid starting core! Thanks KW and Jerry!!

From what I hear, it's the 4-year, $56m deal, with the $17m option if he gets traded.

And where exactly do you hear that?

I congratulate the White Sox for finally doing the right thing.

Not automatically because Mark is a fan favorite, a good teammate and a solid representative for the franchise....those things are important, but if he didn't pitch worth a damn, I wouldn't care if they did unload him.

But the fact is that he's a very good pitcher...couple that with being a fan favorite and a good teammate and a solid representative for the franchise and he's a keeper. The kind of player you wish you had more of.

Again congratulations to all concerned!

By the way Buster Olney is reporting at ESPN.com that the deal is 4 years / 56 million and the Sox agreed to the contract increase both in terms of money and in length if he is traded before it expires.

It does not have a no-trade clause.

Regarding the NTC, more importantly?

4 year, $56 million. Full NTC for first year. Then there is a 20-month or so window where he could be traded. If traded, the annual pay goes up plus an option kicks in which would raise the deal to $75 million over the four years (maybe five). I'm not sure of the year-by-year breakdown.

I guess it's a matter of semantics.

Yes Mark has to consent to a deal, for all intents and purposes it is a no trade clause.

However Kenny saves face by saying there's isn't one written into the contract so he can maintain his stance about not giving them.

Agreed the escalator clause and the Sox finally consenting to it closed the deal.

Like in any other profession....computer designers, lawyers, janitors, rock stars, there are good people and bad ones, one's who do their job well and one's who slide on by.

In a deal like this I'd imagine the Sox, at least out of courtesy, let the Commissioner's office know about it.

Olney has sources in that office and throughout MLB so I'd say it's a good bet he's on the nose with it.

thankfully, common sense prevailed in sox management.. this deal made sense for so many reasons both on the field and off... they have an asset that they protected below market value.. and if he has a rough year next year he could concievably still be traded to fetch those prospects.. highly unlikely but the sox are protected somewhat if the worse happens and they have to completely rebuild after 08..

I heart MB and will be purchasing a #56 jersey asap..

I have to say that kenny and jerry have responded to the fans over the last few years and I hope that buys them a little more loyalty going down the road.. the sox fans are coming out and management is spending.. baseball the way it should be in a major market.. kudos to everybody involved. now, go out and win 55 games in the second half.. go sox.

Indeed. Here's the full quote from Rogers' column Dec. 23, 2006. Of course, after he wrote of the "guarantee" that Buehrle, Garland, and Vazquez would be leaving town, two of the three have been re-signed:

On the surface, the McCarthy deal is another part of the Williams/Jerry Reinsdorf plan to replace, rather than re-sign, Buehrle, Garland and Vazquez (along with the recently departed Freddy Garcia) before the 2009 season. This is a despicable plan, not just because it puts economics ahead of competitiveness but because it guarantees that guys who brought a World Series parade to Chicago are going to be leaving town too soon, maybe still in their primes.

I was surprised Hawk and DJ didn't say more about the dugout handshakes when they were happening. I think Rogers will give credit where credit is due and will give KW credit for inking Buehrle. I doubt he'll use the words "I was wrong," but he'll still give KW credit.

I think Garland is a goner after 2008---at the latest. Buehrle's motives had a lot to do with being from Missouri. Garland doesn't have ties to the midwest--he'll be going for top dollar, and that's his prerogative.

Yep. I completely expect Garland to be back on the West Coast once his contract is up; probably the NL.

It shows weakness in Kenny for listening to the fans??:?:

EVERY TRUE WHITE SOX FAN WANTED MARK BACK!!! Mark wanted to be back.

I'm sorry, but I think that you are way off on that. I think it shows GREAT character in Kenny if he did infact listen to all the emails and the chants at the park over the past week.

Instead of doing whatever he feels like doing, perhaps he did listen to the fans and that is a HUGE part of being a GOOD GM.
I said it earlier and I'll say it again. I want my teams GM's decisions to be made according to what his vision is for the team not because he wants to give in to the fans. I forgot how the saying goes but its to the effect of, "he who listens to the fans ends up sitting with them!"

If this is true and the Sox and Kenny feel this way they might as well move him now. Maybe get a big return from Anaheim (Santana, Wood), Dodgers (Billingsley and/or Kemp) Dbacks (Quentin, Top prospect Pitcher), Mariners (???,???)

Part of the GM's job is to field a team that will put butts in the seats, this deal was good for both the team and PR with the fans. It wasn't done simply because of fan backlash.

Just great news.

Forget what I said this morning. I'm renewing the season tix.

You are correct sir!!!

I have been a season ticket holder since 1997 and for the first time in a decade, I was STRONGLY considering not re-uping for 2008 if the Sox did not sign Mark. It would have made me THAT MAD!!! But, that's all a moot point!

You best believe that I will be back for the full season, Section 163 in 2008!!!!!:supernana:

At 4:00 this afternoon at the Thunderbolts game in Crestwood, the PA guy says to the crowd, 'For all you White Sox fans, here's some good news: the Sox have re-signed Mark Buehrle. Re-signed Buehrle, 4-year deal, that's all we know now, good news for Sox fans!' Yes!

Glad this got done and announced before the ASB. Good job all around.

No i'm not saying that at all. Someone said they hope the fan response on Monday and Saturday as well as emails caused KW to come to an agreement. I'm simply saying I hope Kenny decided that the best decision for on-field success is to have Burls in the rotation, not because some fans emailed him saying they won't come to a game next season.

Yes and no. Of course, there are occasions when the feeling of the fans coincides with what is best for the team. It's also true that if there are no butts in the seats, it would be more difficult to build a winning team.

Trading Buehrle in the middle of his free agent year would have brought little in return. The Sox may have been able to find a quality starter, possibly even a better starter, for twice the price in the market at the end of the year. For that matter, they still could. The Sox haven't lost anything by not trading Buehrle, just as the Mariners didn't end up getting any help when they fleeced the Sox in the Garcia trade.

This was a case where there was no question that the good of the team and the desire of the fans were one in the same. Kenny Williams believed (and I agreed, still do) that the White Sox would be a better team by not re-signing Frank Thomas. That is a point that has been hashed out in other threads without a resolution of consensus. A lot of fans disagreed with that move, and Kenny Williams understood that would be the case. I believe the fans and objective observers who believe the Sox would be better off by not re-signing Buehrle constitute a tiny minority.

This will go down as the best moment of the 2007 season. The fact that Mark was signed doesn't make your statement true. Nor does it make all the "wait and see" comments true. Its just as likely all the pro-Mark activity from the fan base made them reconsider their options.

Phil Roger's column on this should just be a written apology if he's gotten any real integrity. He called the organization despicable, while every clear headed fan was preaching patience, knowing that is sort of ignorant to predict the future when so much can change in baseball over the course of a few months.

He wrote in absolutes and was ridicuously wrong. I love Phil's writing and insight, but his decision to play Mariotti for two years is what really is despicable. What is the difference between Rogers and the people here chiming in with him? Hell, people were sucking ESPN ass to rip on the Sox. This was a definite low point in the history of this site. Maybe 5% didn't turn on the Sox. :(:

The difference is that Rogers is paid to have intelligent, measured opinions. When we write something on a message board, it's often not the product of drawn-out cognizant thought. With every piece he publishes, he's had days to think about the content and research. With most of his columns about our offseason, it seemed like he was going out of his way to speak in absolutes and insult an organization that is two years removed from a World Series.

I was surprised Hawk and DJ didn't say more about the dugout handshakes when they were happening. Kudos to WGN for keeping the camera on Buehrle as was shaking hands and high-fiving guys in the dugout in the top of the eighth. But DJ just made some quick comment that the players were saying their "see you laters" before the All-Star break; then Hawk starting telling a story from his playing days. Neither mentioned Buehrle by name.
Maybe they knew but were forbidden to mention it until it was announced in the park. The camera operators clearly weren't in on it. My first thought was that Buehrle had signed because everyone was smiling, but Hawk's and DJ's smoke screen threw me off.

By the way Buster Olney is reporting at ESPN.com that the deal is 4 years / 56 million and the Sox agreed to the contract increase both in terms of money and in length if he is traded before it expires.

It does not have a no-trade clause.
