I only saw the first two innings and then the 9th, but it looked like an ugly one. At least they didn't just quit and lose 20-4 or something, they made it interesting in the 9th. Too bad we didn't make them waste Nathan.

The biggest thing is Garland, though. What he did today was exactly what he wasn't supposed to do. At the very least he needed to eat up innings...now we need a huge game from Floyd tonight.

Garland has no command of his fastball and none of his offspeed pitches were working. Just a horrible day for him, and the defense was wretched behind him.

Well, that was absolutely ridiculous. You're not supposed to lose a baseball game when you score 14 runs. Then again, you're not supposed to give up 20 runs in a baseball game, either.

It's very difficult to take both games of a double header, and we have some momentum going into the second game. I don't think it will be as bad as people think.

We have a double header...what's he supposed to do, waste the entire bullpen?

It's okay, Gavin Floyd will go all 9 innings tonight while only throwing only 85 pitches. :D:

1. No.
2. We need some guys available to work in relief in the event Floyd gets rocked.

My brother did a bit of checking, and found out that today's start ranks as probably the worst performance by a Sox starting pitcher since at least 1957:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/PhmR

Garland's Game Score (which what that list is based on) was -11.

Note that Jamie Navarro is on that list of 7 games a staggering 3 times, BTW.

Opening day with Jose felt worse, but that was probably because I was there, and had delusions of grandeur for this team.

we heard on the ride home (left at 14-8) that the last time they gave up 20 runs was in 98 to Texas.

I felt that they needed rex go to deep in the ninth to Berrian to win it, but what do I know..

Did anyone see a kid get hit with a foulball in the forehead in the bottom of the 7th?

If you did, or have a tape of the game (if any mention of that is on the tape) please let me know. It was my nephew who got hit. The kid's (10 years old) a HUGE Sox fan. In fact I took him to the recent Friday Cubs/Sox game at the Cell.

My nephew is a great kid and dealing with a very difficult medical situation now. And now this is compounding it.

I'm waiting on how he's doing.

PS I'll be offline till after 10 tonight, in case someone replies. I'm not ignoring you. I'll reply later tonight.

I didn't know the Bears and Vikings decided to replace the real teams today and play baseball. Too bad the Bears came up two field goals short.

The Sox scored more runs in Game 1 today than in any other game this season, and it was a laugher--for the Twins!

And for those who wanted to see Masset today--well, you saw him.

All I can say is "wow" and "pass me another beer".

2 questions from Florida, was the wind howling and why did Ozzie leave Garland in so long?

With the way that the bullpen has been this year Ozzie didn't have alot of options available. The bullpen has proven that they cannot be relied upon to hold a lead and finish the game. If anything the bullpen has blown saves this year. That's just my opinion of course. That fact that the Sox scored 14 runs in a game is a bright spot within itself. When was the last time that happened? However the downside is that the Sox gave up 20 runs.

That's a great way to put it! When I jumped on the computer late this afternoon to see the score, I just started to laugh. It became even more funny when I say we had committed five errors. We're so pathetic, its funny.:D:

Without even checking the list, Arnie Munoz came to mind immediately from 2004. I was surprised, though, that he is/was at the top of the list.

To follow up on just how bad Game 1 was...

http://www.baseball-reference.com/sotd/archives/71

In the last 50 years, a team has scored at least 14 runs and lost the game just 22 times

...

Amazingly, though, you can see that no team on this list lost by more than 3 runs. Well, congrats to Ozzie Guillen’s crew for shattering that record and losing by 6 runs. Was 2005 really only 2 years ago?

was in attendance with my son and we were just stunned by the garland outing.. he was 1.91 era that last 6 starts and it was like the twins knew exactly what was coming.. I like Jonny a lot and will give him the benefit of the doubt since he has been so good but it was just weird to see him get pounded like that..

so many little things added up... at least 3-4 mental errors on top of 5 real errors.. two guys thrown out with bad baserunning..juan throwing to the wrong base really got the game off to a bad start.

This isn't meant to make an excuse for Garland, but to point out that the team needs to be smarter about some things...

There is absolutely no reason Garland should have been signing hundreds of autographs at the Taste of Chicago a day before his start. Doing so does take a certain toll on the muscles in your hand and arm. I've read on numerous occasions over the years quotes from players who have appeared at autograph events that signing hundreds of items does take a toll on you.
