Last night, I put in the DVD player the HBO special "When It Was a Game." Even though it had a lot of focus on New York's role in the history of baseball of that time, I still think it was very well done. For those of you who have not seen it, it's a compilation of color 16mm film shot mainly by players from the '30s to the '50s.

The key for me is the footage being in color. I spent so much time as a kid looking at old black and white baseball photos, and the first time I saw that video the color footage just jumped right out at me. And the personal player recollections just add to it. The most perfect baseball film.

When It Was A Game 2 is also not bad, but you get the impression it was just the stuff that couldn't make the cut to be in the first film.

WIWAG 1 was my favorite, because they focused on people's home movie footage and recollection...WIWAG 2 moved more into the TV era and I think it lost some of the "magic" for me because you saw stuff that everyone, more or less, got to see. the 1st one was almost a treasure trove of memories.

To me though, every time I watch them I always look for Old Comiskey. Those are my favorite parts. 17 years and I still miss that place.

What blew me away the first time I saw it was the color footage of ads on the Green Monster

To me the wall was always just green with no ads

Well in 2007 it is almost as bad as 1941

Exactly. Seeing all the old ballparks (even Wrigley) in color is incredible. It's also cool to see all the parks (Crosley, Ebbets, Polo Grounds, Forbes) that were gone before I was born or shortly thereafter.

But, yeah, seeing shots of Old Comiskey and the arch "windows" makes my heart beat a little quicker. Nerdy? Sure. But it is Old Comiskey.

The 3rd in the series, the 60's, is what really hit home to me...and it was nice seeing color shots of Hoyt Wilhelm and Tommy Agee in their Sox uniforms.

What got me was seeing Cy Young in uniform at obviously an old timers game

In episode 1 you will see shots of the Fenway wall advertising Boston's second NFL team that played at Fenway - The Boston Yanks ( Redskins were the first )

The Boston Yanks was a National Football League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League) team based in Boston, Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston%2C_Massachusetts) that played from 1944 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1944) to 1948 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948). The team played its home games at Fenway Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenway_Park). Team owner Ted Collins (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ted_Collins&action=edit) picked the name "Yanks" because he originally wanted to run a team that played at New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City)'s Yankee Stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_Stadium). Unfortunately, the Yanks could only manage a 2-8 record during its first regular season.
