It would be nice if the Red Sox could decide if the All-Star Game is an important event or a midsummer inconvenience.

It may not have been his idea, but David Ortiz was happy to cede his position on the players' All-Star ballot to Kevin Youkilis.

I have no problem with this at all. Those All-Star ballots are printed before the season even begins. Every year someone breaks out who deserves to be there but isn't on the ballot. Besides, I think it's silly to limit the PLAYERS ballots. I understand why you have to do it with the fan ballots, but the players shouldn't be limited in who they can vote for once the starters are chosen.

The White Sox had 2 "first baseman" last year when the players voted for Thome and Guillen took Konerko. Youk deserves a shot with the way he's played this year. Ortiz is easily going to win the fan ballot, so why keep the players from voting for Youk?

The Boston first baseman in question has decent enough numbers to be sure, but he's at a position that is deep with big offensive numbers. He's no shoe-in to make the team at all. Maybe on the ESPN ballots, which only feature Yankee and Red Sox players.

I don't like it. If he has the numbers,he'll make it.
