Carlos lost control of the 5th and in between innings pitcher and catcher exchanged a few words, and then lots of shoving. Everyone had to seperate them immediately because it was going to go to blows!

Barrett was taken out of the game as well.

If you haven't seen it, just wait. The "punch" Zambrano landed was more like a slap. It looked like a 6th grade girl fight.

It was interesting that Pinella and Rothschild bolted out of the dugout and into the clubhouse. I wonder what else happened?

If Sox fan Sam Zell would've just waited until Big Z's contract was taken care of to purchase the team, none of this would've happened and we'd have a Cy Young winner on the North side. Pathetic!

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=chn) pitcher Carlos Zambrano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6559) shoved catcher Michael Barrett (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6098) as the two were being separated in the dugout during the middle of the fifth inning of Friday's game against Atlanta.
The Braves had just scored five runs in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 7-1. One run scored on a passed ball and throwing error by Barrett.
Zambrano was seen pointing at his head and yelling at the catcher in the dugout before the bottom half, then shoved him. Neither came out for the sixth.

Too funny. No matter how tough of a time the White Sox may be having the Cubs never fail to sink lower. :smile:Well this is true, but I still think the Sox can turn this thing around, where the cubs are done. If the Sox salvage this season, make the playoffs or win upwards of 90 games, doesn't Sox popularity continue to grow? One thing can always be said of the Sox, they are a good unit. Sans AJ, public perception of the Sox as 'people' is very good. PK, Buehrle, Dye, Crede and of course, Thome are really good guys, as well as players. And inside the clubhouse AJ is very well liked. The cubs are really a mess.

This is a better angle that shows Zambrano being more of an agressor than the other angle:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCZUIEsRcv0

I am not sure if the mic picked up Zambrano muttering, "This is for AJ" or not.

THAT IS HILARIOUS !! Seeing that just made my day. Now you know what happens when two storm fronts composed of nothing but swagger, and lots of hot air collide. The Perfect Storm ? No. Just some slapping, followed by pouting. This is almost on par with the Sally Slap Fest between Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson 10 years ago.

If you trade Zambrano the fan base will be angry cuz he's their "ace" if you trade Barrett they will be upset because they love Barrett cuz he punched AJ. I thought it was funny the way Barrett pointed to the scoreboard as if to say "Hey, I didn't give up 13 hits!" We thought the Sox had problems? Our problems are nothing compared to these clowns. At least AJ and Buerhle aren't trying to kill each other in the club house.

Gotta love Comcast or even throw Fox in there, won't show this stuff, won't show people running on the field, or garbage getting thrown on the field, hell, even when I watch extra innings, it happens a lot and they refuse to show it on TV (remember Vin Scully just give one guy a verbal beatdown to a guy that did it in LA), but when it's the Sox, it gets on ESPN

I expect the Trib to have a picture of the person on the field on their site (yeah right), since they put one up from a Sox game this year.

He just raised his voice a little bit, complained about his guys having to start "playing like major-leaguers or get someone else in here who can catch a damn ball or run the bases properly".

So I just saw the clip of some guy in a red jacket (don't know who it was) coming out of the clubhouse tunnel into the dugout and saying something. Derek Lee jumped out of his seat and ran into the clubhouse, while everyone else just seemed to sit there and not care. They cut off the clip, but according to ESPN Piniella and Rothschild followed, so I assume they ended up going to. Either way, they didn't seem extremely concerned. I just find that hilarious, that Derek Lee was the only one who was really concerned. It seems like an appropriate representation of their team.

Also lost in all of this is that Willie Harris had three hits for the Braves today.

Sox win, Cubs fight... a perfect day!

Seriously, if the Cubs players and brass fall in line like dominoes behind Zambozo's actions, there's something seriously wrong.

The best thing that can happen for us Cub-despizers is that the Cubs resign that headcase and be forced to pay 15 mil a season for that idiot powderkeg.

I'm no fan (AT ALL) of Barrett, but that kind of play happens in baseball, and Zambrano had no right to confront his catcher that play. Shows what an immature, whiny, selfish, doofus Zambrano is. Hopefully his FA stock went way down over this (and his crappy performance under pressure to get a big contract) and teams take a pass on him.

Well, Barrett was setting up outside and the pitch was inside and the way Barrett was talking to the infielders before Z slugged him, it looks like Barrett forgot the sign. Which begs the question, how the hell does a catcher forget the god damned sign???? Still, Zambrano had NO right to show up a teammate like that.

I've watched it a few times and (I know this brings to question my social life) if you slow-mo it, you can see that after Barrett points to the scoreboard, he takes a step toward Zambrano. That's when Z-boz starts the slap and tickle festivities.

And Barrett's the one that pursued things in the clubhouse moments later. I don't know, maybe he was going to try and apologize, but it seems to me that his pride was hurt and he couldn't let it go. Well, he got what was coming to him.

Don't get me wrong, Zambrano is a head case and he started the whole thing, but it looked like Barrett was gonna initiate the physical stuff. Z-boz just beat him to the punch (or girly slap).

Piniella looks like he's about to climb a water tower with a scoped rifle. And Soriano looks like Peter Pan in that photo.

excessively diverting and i mean too damn funny for words .. also i heard that the big Z was yelling at barrett down the tunnel to come up and fight like a man.

almost

expect a major brawl at Fenway today. You can bet the ranch Schilling will throw at either A-Rod or Jeter in the first inning because of what Scott Proctor did last night (throwing at Youk's head in the 9th)

Unless the umpires issue warnings before the first pitch.

Back to the subject at hand, imagine what the media scene will be today when Barrett and Zambrano arrive at Wrigley Field today.

Strange things happen when FOX televises these 2 teams ( game being fed to Chicago today )

1=Yankees @ Red Sox (HD) - 85% Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, Ken Rosenthal
2=Cardinals @ Astros - 14% Kenny Albert, Joe Girardi

Zambrano is addressing the media. ESPN 1000 carrying feed.

Sounds beleagured.
Said he was fined but not suspended but Piniella would suspend him the next time there is a fight.
Says he's sorry to the Cubs and Cub fans.
Reluctant to talk much about incident because he seems to feel that would make things worse.
Not concerned about his shoulder.
Said only God could control his emotions and that he does not have anger management problems.

[ The scene: A wrestling arena. ]

Brickhouse: "It's a beautiful day for a brawlgame. Hey, hey, holy mackeral, here come the Cubs!"

[ Enter from left, Mikey Barrett. From right, Carlos "Zero" Zambrano. ]

Brickhouse: "And here come the gladiators! That's Barrett in the pink trunks, just so no one becomes confused. And now, down to Bob Elson at ringside."

[ Elson is shown napping on a stool. An unseen hand pokes him in the ribs, temporarily rousing him from his somnolence. He seems confused. ]

Elson: "Ladies and gentlemen, your referee is AJ Pierzynski."

Brickhouse: "And there's the bell. Zambrano throws a wicked right to Barrett's chops. Another right, now a left. Barrett is down! He appears to be bleeding Cubbie blue profusely. Now, Zambrano stomps him! Fans, this is the worst mugging this announcer has witnessed since Billy Martin's assault on Jim Brewer. And where is the referee? Where's AJ?!"

[ Cut to AJ, standing in a corner. He seems to be haggling with a fan. Money is exchanged. ]

Brickhouse: "Here he comes at last. Looks like he's carrying a folding chair." [ Pause ] "Oh, he just clobbered Zambrano over the head with a metal folding chair! At least he appears to be helping the stricken Barrett to his feet. [ Brief pause ] OH NO!! HE HIT BARRETT WITH THE CHAIR AS WELL!!! Both men are out cold. Whoo brother! Let's go to the truck for Arnie and the replay."

Elson: "That's a White Owl wallop, and a box of White Owl cigars."

I can just imagine the reception Zambozo and Barrett are going to get when the Cubs visit US Cellular in three weeks.

We'll probably see boxing gloves, black eyes, pink tutus, fake split lips, and more I'm sure.

Should be quite amusing, like that photo that shows the Sox fans pointing up to the sky as Zambrano exits the game. Priceless. I can hardly wait for the festivities to begin.

Before I heard what happened, one of the Cub fans at work was telling me how the Cubs were losing 5-1 and Barrett had blown a throw to 3rd. We were laughing about how it's hardly any fun to poke fun at the other team since both were doing so poorly. I ought to have some fun on Monday. :D:

It will be interesting to see how the Cubs cover this up.

You mean besides the the fact that Tribune owned ChicagoSports.com had photos of it on the site before the game ended (and in fact it's still the top story), Cubs.com having two stories about it, and the Cubs broadcast station of the day, Comcast SportsNet, showing it nonstop (including adding a second logo to the footage)?

Just remember the result of that game (Sox lose). You don't want the team to get fired up over it.

This has probably already been posted (a lot of people have chimed in), but having just watched the highlights, Barrett was not at fault this time. Zambrano is a major league jerk, as if we didn't already know this.
Actually, Barrett walked toward Zambrano. Now, after Barrett suckerpunched A.J. last year, he claimed it was because A.J. started walking toward him. So using Barrett's own standards, Zambrano was totally justified for taking a swing at him.

And Barrett was totally at fault for going into the clubhouse to confront Zambrano a second time. I'll bet he tried to sucker punch him with his patented "come from behind and hold him with one arm while punching with the other move" and Z kicked the crap out of him. Kudos to Zambrano for that.

They lost because of Mack misplaying a ball in CF, boy I wonder why that sounds familiar? Not because of the of the sCrUBS getting fired up over it.

Barrett will be gone. How can he catch Zambrano again? I just don't see it, especially when in the AJ incident he wouldn't even talk to AJ after the game; he'll probably hold a grudge. I've got a feeling Lou isn't a big fan, either...he'll be out of there.

By the deadline, Zambozo will be gone, as well...that team isn't going anywhere fast.

Shipping one or both of them out is easier said than done. Barrett is their starting catcher and Blanco sucks (and is on the DL). Who has a starting catcher they would send the Cubs in exchange for Barrett? Nobody.

Zambozo is their best pitcher. Who will send them a really good pitcher for a hothead in his contract year?

What is really getting to me is how all these former ballplayers are on ESPN, etc. today saying these fights happen all the time on all baseball teams. They just don't happen in public. They happen in the locker rooms, buses, and planes. I'm glad I did not grow up to become a pro baseball player!

I don't think that highly of Cotts but the fact is, Mack ****ed that game up by ****ing up that flyball into the right CF gap. Which caused all three runs to score.

The Cubs are not even going to be able to win that weak division; they're toast. Barrett is not good, either. The only thing he's been any good at is hitting the ball, and he can't even do that this year. Besides, Barrett and the Bozo are both free agents at the end of the year; they were going to end up trading them anyway.
