View Full Version : Turn Back the Clock Games Compiling a List

I have been doing some research (old threads included) to put together a list of the Turn Back the Clock games that the Sox have played (not including 2001 with the alternates on Sundays).

I am looking for: (i) jersey worn; (ii) opponent; (iii) date; and (iv) result.

My first Sox game was the first ever TBTC game on July 11, 1990 against the Brewers honoring the 1917 team. The Sox lost the 4 hour, 44 minute affair by a score of 12-9 in 13 innings (after Radinsky and company gave up 6 in the 8th).

I know that there were two in 2003 one at Cleveland with the 1953 uniforms. The second honored the 1983 team an old thread mentioned that it was a game against Cleveland that Loaiza won, which would make it the 8-5 win on September 6.

Thanks for the help!

Off-hand...

1) They broke out the 1906 throwbacks twice last year - once against the Cubs (the third game of the set at the Cell) and one other time that I can't remember.

2) They wore the 1959 throwbacks in 2005 against the Dodgers.

3) IIRC, they were supposed to wear the late 70's pajama jerseys at a road game (I think it was against Toronto) at some point, but something happened (caught in customs?) and they just wound up wearing the navy caps with current road uniforms.

4) They wore Chicago American Giants (Negro League) throwbacks in a game in Detroit in...2004?

5) Oh, and they participated in that godawful "Turn Ahead The Clock" promotion in 1999. Not quite throwback, but...

hmm...Rangers, I think...that was the game Garland tried to retaliate twice and couldn't do it. Oz chewed him out for it in the dugout.

That sounds like this one on 7/23/2006 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHA/CHA200607230.shtml) - Garland vs. Padilla (no doubt throwing at the Sox).

The Sunday Cubs game (other with the 1906) was May 21 - the late inning meltdown - lost 7-4.

Yep. I was there. Same night they traded Loaiza for Contreras. The Sox lost the game that night.

They wore their '69 uniforms the same night the Brewers wore their old Seattle Pilots uniforms back in '99.

That was the game; Garland pitched a gem and Thornton closed it out.

The Tigers wore Detroit Stars uniforms, too.

Yes, it was the Rangers game last season. It was 7/23/2007 on a Sunday at 1:05 P.M.

Or, they just missed a couple of letters: throw it back

:gulp:A handful of teams (Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, and a few others) declined to participate. When asked why they weren't wearing TATC jerseys, Steinbrenner said, "We are."

Possibly the best thing he ever did. ;)

Ultimately, the Sox uniform was one of the less brutal, if only because it was a white jersey with black sleeves and a big, off-kilter SOX logo.

You might need a barf bag, though.

In '96, they wore their 1964 uniforms, I want to say they were playing the Brewers and there was 1959 against the Dodgers in '05

Those Phillies jerseys are kinda cool.

I am pretty sure that they also had a throwback uniform in honor of the 1983 team. I guess it would have been 2003. IIRC, there was a weekend series with a hat day on Friday, team wore the throwbacks on Saturday, and possibly alot of the original 1983 team was there for Saturday or Sunday's game. My memory is getting a little hazy.

Here's where I am at right now with the responses so far.

In full disclosure on the "Future" game - I actually own a replica of the Sox jersey. I get strange looks and questions when I wear it.

Well, I was right about 1964, but the game was in 1995, July 5, and the opponent was the Yankees

In addition to the 2003 TBTC to 1983 I believe that there was a TBTC to 1983 in 1993. I still have the giveaway hat, with the 1983 block-letter logo in silver on a black hat -- the idea was the old logo in the current colors. My memory is that this was part of a TBTC but I cannot recall the date or opponent. I do remember Paciorek talking about 1983. Someone else may be able to confirm or deny.

I found another one last night. Sox played at Tampa on August 12, 2000. The Sox wore the 1906 away uniform (navy blue and white) and Tampa wore the jerseys of the Florida Saints. The Sox won 5-4 in 10. Buehrle threw 9 and picked up the win. Frank had 2 doubles and raised his average to .341.

The Sox were the one's who invented TBTC Day. In 1990,the final season old Old Comiskey, the Sox wore cool circa 1917 style Uniforms,Nancy Faust played an accordion, and altho Bob Finniagn was in his final season as Sox PA announcer, Gene Honda ran around the field with a megaphone. They had 'old style' vending prices and an old fashioned style of scorecard. Other teams have copied on this which was partly Rob Gallas's idea, and partly that of then Sox Pr Director Chuck Adams.
Oh yeah.the Sox blew the game to the Brewers in the final two innings, and Manager Jeff Torborg said after that game that they would not wear those unis any more(no doubt because of the loss). And they didn't.

I know in 2004 they wore TBC jerseys in Detroit. I think the game was in July or August. They use to have a clip of Konerko's diving catch in the bottom of the 9th on whitesox.com

That's the game where they & the Tigers wore the Negro League throwbacks.

July 19, 1999 in County Stadium, Sox won 10-8 in 12 innings:
