If it's bizarre it must be Baltimore!

May 19, 1963 - Sox starter Ray Herbert’s consecutive scoreless inning streak ends controversially in (where else?) Baltimore. Herbert, a twenty game winner in 1962, had thrown 38 straight scoreless innings when he faced the Orioles Johnny Orsino in the 3rd inning. Orsino then hit what appeared to be a home run to left field...or did he? Both Al Lopez and Dave Nicholson argued that the ball struck an iron railing on the left field wall, then bounced back into play. Their contention was it should have been a ground rule double since the ball never went into the seats or left the playing field. They lost the argument, Herbert lost his scoreless streak and the Sox lost the game 4 - 3 in ten innings. (Herbert remembered this game and spoke about it in his interview with White Sox Interactive.)

May 19, 1996 - In a 14 - 3 clubbing of the Tigers in Detroit, Sox players Darren Lewis and Robin Ventura hit grand slams. The home runs come in the 3rd and 9th innings.

May 19, 2004 - The promising season suffered its first major injury as on a pop up in short right, infielder Willie Harris slams his shoulder into outfielder Magglio Ordonez’s knee. Ordonez would go on the injured list, come back and play a few games, then miss the rest of the season. Eventually he’d go to Europe for an operation and leave the Sox as a free agent.

That Mags card is from the '03 Topps Heritage set, which is one of the nicest modern sets ever produced. It's modeled after the 1954 Topps Set.

I also love the design of that classic Herbert card. I have the 2003 Fleer Tradition set, which is the modern version of the set.

Losing Mags and then Frank really spelt the end of the Sox year that year. Had they stayed healthy I still think we could have made a good run at the division.
