The Yankees have fired “director of performance enhancement” Marty Miller.

Over the winter, Cashman got rid of Jeff Mangold, the Yanks' strength and conditioning coach for the previous nine seasons, and hired Marty Miller, who served as a minor league trainer for the Expos from 1995-97, to serve in the newly created position of director of performance enhancement. Miller had not worked in baseball since leaving the Expos, spending the past nine years as the director of fitness at the Ballen Isles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He has a master's degree from California University of Pennsylvania in performance enhancement and injury prevention.

I said this to a buddy after Hughes went down last night. "Forget Torre or Cashman, fire the damn trainer. If everyone is going down with Hamstring issues, obviously HE is doing something wrong"

Cashman must have been at the bar too

I was waiting for another Brushback link because I assumed Sosa, Bonds and Palmeiro all signed 10 day contracts with the Yankees.

Update:The Yankees welcome back an familiar face in a new station. George Costanza is now the new director of performance enhancement. Rumors that Costanza was awarded lifetime employment with the Yankees due to giving Steinbrenner access to a decades worth of calzones has yet to be substantiated. More on this story as it develops.

Ummm...were all the other names taken? Did they think they would fool applicants into thinking they could go surfing between classes?

The term "performance enhancement" sounds a little suspicious, wouldn't you say? Either way, whatever it is isn't working for the Yankees right now.

George's hammy whammy (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2007/05/03/2007-05-03_georges_hammy_whammy.html)

The Yankees' rash of injuries appears to have finally cost someone their job, but it isn't Joe Torre or Brian Cashman. ... more (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2007/05/03/2007-05-03_georges_hammy_whammy.html)

I also hear he was a graduate of Hollywood Upstairs Medical College.

So this guy was basically a golf buddy with a title? And now he's fired? I blame poor tips in the Clubhouse.

Either Steinbrenner listens to Dan Patrick on ESPN radio, and acts according to Dan's observations, or Patrick gets a heads-up from the Yankee front office and spins his show accordingly. Patrick made the Yankee pitchers with hammy problems correlation on air a few days ago.
