The start of a new month with one of the busiest day's in franchise history...that's for sure!
May 1, 1901 - It’s the first time in team history the Sox hit two grand slams in the same game. The Sox bury Detroit 19 - 9 with outfielders "Dummy" Hoy and Herm McFarland clearing the bases.

May 1, 1951 - Recently acquired outfielder "Minnie" Minoso makes his White Sox debut. The "Cuban Comet" becomes the first black player in team history. In his first at bat as a member of the Sox he hits a home run into the center field bull pen off Vic Raschi. The drive went an estimated 415 feet. Later in the same game won by the Yankees 8 - 3, Mickey Mantle would hit the first of his 536 home runs. Minoso would go on to named named the American League Rookie of the Year for 1951.

May 1, 1954 - Sox pitcher Virgil "Fire" Trucks tosses a one hitter in beating the Red Sox 3 - 0. It was the first of his pair of one hitters for the 1954 season.

May 1, 1959 - It’s one of the greatest individual performances ever turned in by a pitcher. On this day at Comiskey Park, Early Wynn does everything in beating the Red Sox 1 - 0. Wynn fires a one hitter, striking out 14 AND he hits a home run in the 8th inning accounting for the game’s only run! Wynn allowed a one out single in the first to Pete Runnels and that was it.

May 1, 1960 - Al Smith connects on a Jim Bunning pitch and sets off Bill Veeck’s new exploding scoreboard for the first time. The Sox would win the game 6 -3, then sweep the twin bill taking game #2, 5 - 2.

May 1, 1963 - Nellie Fox raps out his 2,500th career hit. It comes during a 7 - 0 Sox win over the Orioles at Comiskey Park. The pitcher was Mike McCormick.

May 1, 1973 - Dick Allen hit a lot of long home runs in his time with the White Sox but this may have been his longest. On a cool, damp night at Comiskey Park, Allen deposited a pitch from the Orioles Mike Cuellar on to the roof in left center field. The pitch was unusual as it approached home plate and many speculated that what Allen hit was a ‘Cuban Forkball’ (i.e. spitball) that failed to break downwards. Allen would hit two home runs on the night in the Sox 6 - 5 win.

May 1, 1991 - The Sox lose one of the longest games in their history 10 - 9 to the Brewers in Milwaukee. The Sox blew leads of 5 - 0 and 9 - 6 in this one. The game ran so long that WGN-TV sports director Dan Roan who was covering the game, had to do his sports from the parking lot of a bar on route 41 just inside the state line. He couldn’t get back to the studio in time!
