View Full Version : The Tampa Bay Sun Rays?

Just came across a small blurb in a new BP article that the Devil Rays are looking to change their nickname for 2008. Among the candidates are simply the "Rays" and also the "Sun Rays," although the team won't announce anything until after the season. Further:

a switch of color schemes from the current green and black to a likely yellow-and-blue combination. If they do become the Sun Rays, we may have a new winner for least fear-instilling nickname in all of baseball. Sorry, Yakult Swallows...

I think you may have to be a subscriber to read, but like I said it was just a blurb in a rumor mill.

What they should do is just keep the current color scheme (which I think looks really good), and just call themselves the Rays. That way the least amount of turnover and the Sun-Rays is a completely awful name.

Also if they can find a way to sneak out of the Tropicana Dome lease that would also benefit.

They will probably go with the Sun Rays. Some marketing guy will comment how the beat of "Tampa Bay Rays" doesn't sound as good to the ear as the "Tampa Bay Sun Rays", What they will fail to notice is that Sun Rays is a stupid name.

That doesn't sound nearly as bad as the Sun Rays. If they just went with sting rays it might be half way descent.

Off Topic- But why do I get the sense that in the next 10 years this team will move to New Jersey?

Yeah, but I think they are more or less doing it for a new beginning. Starting next year they should actually have some spare money that they didn't have when they decided signing Jose Conseco, Fred McGriff, Greg Vaughn and Vinny Castilla to long multi-year deals was a great investment.

I think Orlando would be a better market, and they are playing a series against Texas there this season. They could go along with Orlando's now defunct Solar Bears (IHL).

Just 8 miles South of downtown Tampa is Macdill Air Force Base.
Maybe they should copy San Diego and cater to the military guys in the area.

I like the name as it is, but if it had been a Marine Base in the Tampa area, the transition to "Devil Dogs" would be easy, and no religious people would complain about supporting the troops.

No problem. I've been a Rays support since 2001 when I noticed they began having quite an influx of great, young talent. Now it's gotten even better, all they need is the pitching to catch up with the offense (Shields is well on his way) and they have the potential to be a real great team.

I feel ya on this one Ex...they're my second favorite team to the Sox obviously (having lived most of my life in both general areas). If they can develop a few arms like they've done with some of their position players then they can be pretty scary.

Their new ownership is actually showing a pulse these days...as opposed to when Naimoli was calling the shots.

I would just dump 'Devil' from their name and get over with it. I really don't know ultimately what it's going to mean outside of a marketing ploy. I mean, it's not like they're going to draw 10,000 more just because they changed their name. Did you know you can get free parking just for showing up there. It's amazing what they're trying to do to get people in the place.

Deebs14

Did you know you can get free parking just for showing up there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that was only the case for last year when the new ownership first took over.

That area is a massive front-running community in the fact that both the Yucks and Lightning (historically) never drew dick before they won their titles within the last few years. So it wouldn't surprise me that if/when the D-Rays become competitive that they all of a sudden follow suit and win over some of those snow-birds.

Touche.

I've always been partial toward the Ham Fighters.

Their nickname is actually just the "fighters." Nippon Ham just means Japan ham and is the name of the company that owns them. So although it's pretty hilarious, it is significantly less fear-instilling than if they were truly the "fighters of ham."

I wouldn't say a new set of players, as much as I'd say a new set of ownership, scouting and coaches. The talent has been there, but they've thrown it away. If you look back at the 00-02 teams you'll see a lot of guys who are playing pretty decent roles on other teams around the league.

Except when you're sitting near him. I went to a White Sox/DRays game in 03, I believe. The one where Thomas ended the game by just kind of bumping into the catcher instead of sliding or barreling over him. Anyway the guy was a COMPLETE tool, loud and obnoxious. But he did get me to notice Carl Crawford and I haven't looked bad since.

You know one of these days I expect a major American sports team to model its name in the style of a European soccer team. No official nickname. Just the city name. They should just call themselves Tampa Bay BC (Baseball Club), may not sound catchy but it's better than calling the team the Sun Rays when they play in an ugly indoor stadium.
