On a very sad day with what happened to Josh Hancock,,we can remember an April 29th that was plenty more light hearted. I sure can!!!

HAPPY 24th ANNIVERSARY(Sunday) to the 'TIRADE HEARD ROUND THE WORLD!' Yes,,LEE ELIA,then Cub Manager, went off after a Cub loss to the Dodgers dropped their record to 5-14 on April 29,1983. After a few drunken fans tossed beer on Larry Bowa,Keith Moreland, and others on their way to the old Clubhouse that was located in the LF corner,,Elia did not cool off enough and welcomed four reporters into his office(everyone else was in the Dodgers Clubhouse talking to Buffalo Grove native Mike Marshall who played in Wrigley for the first time that day). The four were the Tribune's Robert Markus,Joel Behrig of the Sun Times, and the Daily Herald's Don Friske and myself--then with WLS Radio. Elia seemed fine,,said Hi to us,and I asked the first question, about losing another tough one(on a wild pitch in the 8th inning by Lee Smith). Elia nodded, then began the famous: 'We're mired now in a little difficulty,,,,we've got all these so called f----- fans, who are supposed to be behind you, ripping every f---- thing you do. I know one f---- thing,I hope we get f---- hotter than s---t. Just to stuff it up those 3000 f----people that show up every f---- day." And he just kept on going: '85% OF THE &%$#* WORLD IS WORKING,,,THE OTHER 15 COME OUT HERE,,,A $#&* PLAYGROUND FOR THE &*%$^*%$!!!!'. Yes,that was a small part of Lee Elia's 7 1/2 minute 'Tirade Heard Round the World'! I had the lone microphone in Lee's office..

Funny I was just thinking about Elia's tirade when I was watching the game today.

Particularly the line "I'll tell ya one ****ing thing, I hope we get hotter than ****!"

I love the Earl Weaver Manager's Corner so much but it was done as a joke.
The Lee Elia meltdown on the other hand is just one great filthy moment of anger and frustration. Lenny Bruce would be proud of how many f-bombs were let loose in that tirade.

Was the Earl Weaver one really a joke? I've always considered that THE epic meltown in all of sports. It definitely takes away from it if it was staged.

Can you imagine if a manager did something like Weaver's rant today? It would explode throughout cyberspace and ESPN would break into regular programming to play it non-stop. And that manager would probably lose his job within 24 hours.

That's very funny, PK. Thanks for sharing. My favorite part (as somebody pointed out in the youtube comments) is that they never really get around to discussing the disputed play. It's like that Bull Durham scene where Crash "used a certain word that's a 'no-no' with umpires . . ." but even more detached from the actual game . . .

I wish I could find an mp3 version of the tirade that includes the "We're mired now in a little difficulty" line. It just seems incomplete without it, having heard the bleeped version on the radio start with that line.

I love this email comment about the transcript

"They should set that entire speech in bronze and put it outside of the stadium. School children should be forced to learn it and recite it like the pledge of allegiance. Schoolhouse Rock should write a new song and set the whole thing to music:"Now Lee Elia was mad uh huh uh huhAnd he wanted the public to know He stood up in front of those press men and said the F work 100 times in a row"

As much as I enjoy Elia's profanity laced explosion, I enjoy it more when listening to the "clean" version that has all the four letter words beeped out... which, of course, is about every two words. :D:

I used to have this version saved, but I must have deleted it... anyone know where I can find this?
