I think this was pretty much assumed.

JD is a class act and he will do Jackie Robinson proud by wearing his number.

I heard everyone on the Dodgers might wear #42 on Sunday, subject to approval from MLB.

Nice idea.

In addition to wearing "42," Dye needs to go up to the dish with a banjo the way things are going right now.

Dye is a no-brainer to have the honor for Jackie Robinson. Not only is he a solid player but also great with the community.

Jerry Reisdorf will be proud.

Apparently EVERYBODY on the Sox has the opportunity to wear the number if they chose too, and Dye is the only one that has been confirmed. So I guess all the dodgers will wear it.

edit: I think it would be nice if a lot of the Sox players wore it.

What a great idea, MLB really does this type of thing better than any of the major sports. History is so important to baseball and it is great to see MLB honor it. Hate to give Selig's office any credit, but credit is due.

It was Griffey Jr.'s idea, Selig simply took it and ran with it. So, as usual, not much credit is due.

Shouldn't Jerry reinsdorf wear it since he was the one who was a Brooklyn Dodger fan?

But that's good that Dye is the one wearing it.

Maybe this will get Dye out of his slump. Any change might do him good even if it is short lived.:D:

Having a rep from every team wear the number is a nice tribute, but I think a whole team wearing the same number is a bit silly. On the other hand, a nice patch or something similar would be cool.

It would make for an interesting scorecard. That said, it would be pretty cool to see nothing but 42s every game you saw the whole day. If you're going to bring his number back, do it with some flair.

Guy told me a story he'd heard from an old-time Dodger making a speech. The Bums were going to Philadelphia, and Jackie had received a death threat. The team leaders met with Burt Shotton, Jackie and the brass; the big wheels wanted to keep Jackie out of Shibe, but he insisted on playing. Finally, Eddie Stanky hit on a solution. "Skip," he told Shotton, "how about we all go out there wearing number 42? The guy won't know which one of us to shoot."

I'd love to hear the PA announcer with the starting lineups!

Lol – I wonder if that’s true. It’s a funny quote despite the fact that picking Jackie out the a line of Dodgers wouldn’t have required a number.

That, sir, is precisely why it's a funny quote, albeit on the dark side. The story may be true, but I think the ballplayer who told the story was Preacher Roe, and he did not join the Dodgers till '49. So, at best, Preacher heard it from someone else.

According to this article (http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/cs-070412soxbits,1,4920107.story?coll=cs-home-headlines) Thome and Cintron are also going to be wearing 42. That adds to the list of Dye, Razor Shines, and Harold Baines that had previously been announced.

Only if it's Gene Honda... Gene saying "Number 42" will be as cool as his classic "Number 45". I love it.
