It was a check swing type thing and hit his back elbow. He didn't really lean into it, per se.

There's something to be said for the feeling you get after the first win of a season!!! It wasn't looking too promising there for awhile (one hit in seven innings), but the Sox finally got it together and snatched the win! Way to go, guys!

Good to hear that Buehrls only has a contusion and will be OK! The LAST thing we needed was an injury to one of our starters! The only positive to come from Buehrls leaving the game in the second is that we got to see an AMAZING pitching performance from Masset! He pitched alright on Monday when he came in for Contreras, but he was downright solid this afternoon!!! :bandance:

Don't know if that has anything to do with Mark.. I think maybe Ozzie realizes the starting pitchers aren't doing so hot and the weather being so cold probably doesn't allow them to often go more than 6... so, Haeger can go almost every day and our bullpen could probably use an extra arm out there already

Just got back from the game. The Sox generated 4 runs on only 5 hits, and Massett stepped up big time. He outpitched Golden Boy Sowers. I can't believe the Sox only got 1 hit off that guy, when he walked 5 and only K'ed 1. I guess it helps that every fly ball hit off of him was an automatic out. Not too pleased with Scotty's 1-3 in SB against the worst defensive C in baseball. OTOH, he's the only lefty in Ozzie's "super lefty lineup" who managed to get a hit today.

When I heard the sound that hit made when it bounced of Mark's arm, I was a bit downtrodden. Hell, I got to be honest, I was sick to my stomach. Try explaining to a four year old who is one of the biggest Mark Burhele fan I know what exactly happened; when he keeps asking,

"Where's Mark going?" over and over.

But hey, no bone damage, and one HUGE bruise is something I can live with. A fracture of the forearm in his throwing arm would of been ALOT harder to explain.

Great game to be at. Definitely great to be in the stadium club restaurant for the entire game, since those people out there looked pretty cold.

Hopefully Buehrle won't have to miss a start. I'd imagine the pain on his hand was partially due to the cold weather out there. Masset truly filled in with style. MacDougal looked decent in his brief stint. Hopefully the middle of the lineup will be able to really get it going pretty soon. I don't want for us to have to rely on late-inning heroics or the long ball for too long. We'll see what we get against Minnesota.

Let's make it two in the win column tomorrow night!

I think the Sox can get away with a 12 man rotation .they really don't pinch hit alot as a team and they have alot of versatile players on the bench that can play multi postions .I just don't want Jenks burnt out again at the end of the year like he was last year.

It was nice to see the return of offensive execution. I loved the first inning small ball run as well as the Iguchi sac fly without recording a hit. Then, Pods topped it all off with a two out RBI. If we can tack on a long ball next time, we will have a nice diversified offensive attack. This was a nice hard fought win against a pitcher who brought his "A" game.

All you small-ball freaks can relax now. We manufactured some runs. The situational hitting the guys worked on in spring training showed itself today.

I really wish we could have gotten Nick Masset a win today. Not to take anything away from Jenks. He did his job, and he earns the 'W.' But I thought Nick really saved our asses today. Real strong performance in an emergency situation against a red-hot lineup.

Fingers crossed for Buerhle. Our bullpen is shot now, so we need six or seven solid innings from Vazquez tomorrow night. Get back to .500 tomorrow.

That's interesting because I would think that if Buerhle were to miss his next start, they'd want Haeger pitching today to keep him on the same schedule as Buehrle.

Maybe they will bring Haeger up for the bullpen because of the heavy work load the pen has had so far and because Mr. Five & Dive is starting tomorrow. I hope that title is a thing of the past for Javy.

Not too pleased with Scotty's 1-3 in SB against the worst defensive C in baseball. OTOH, he's the only lefty in Ozzie's "super lefty lineup" who managed to get a hit today.

I'm happy he got that hit and that RBI, but still--going 1-3 in SB against Victor Martinez is unacceptable.

If the Sox decide they need to bring up Haeger, maybe they should DL Pods until he gets his pre-injury 2005 speed back.

Just got back, weird ending, but I'll take it. :D:

Want to give it up for Pods, I was wondering in yesterday's postgame if he'd give us anything if he couldn't get on base, and if Anderson should've started for him today, and he came through. Also have liked what I've seen from Erstad.

Burls loves that 1st inning run, I'll have to watch it again, but off the bat I thought there was no way it'd get out, maybe the wind played with it. Hope he's okay, had a feeling he'd cruise after that, too bad about the injury, but how about Masset, coming up big. I really like this pen, the only weird thing has been Matt, but that should tell you about ST numbers, some here wanted him as the closer in ST.

Hopefully Vazquez can step it up and help out our pen a bit tomorrow night.

I just got back from the game. What a great way to end it. I had no idea what happened, and when I found out, I was defiantly happy. Masset looked good today, but Thornton gave up another lead. But, at least we got the winner.

Masset was the hero today as far as I'm concerned. Coming in on short notice and pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing only one run was huge. Maybe one day his place will be as a starter instead of as a reliever. I'm really encouraged by his contribution today.

It was even more impressive when you consider how hot the Cleveland bats were the first two games of the series. He shut them right down and really picked up his teammates. The home run Michaels hit off him wasn't even a bad pitch. Tip your cap to the hitter in that situation. Masset was very, very solid his entire outing.

The bad part is Nick is now leading our staff in innings pitched. :o: He needs a couple days off. Javy better give us six or seven innings tomorrow.

Just a heads up on possible Buehrle news--

Charlie Haeger was supposed to pitch tonight for Charlotte. The Knights website now has TBD for their starting pitcher.

The Charlotte game is being delayed now, but Heath Phillips is the starter.

They scratched Haeger, so stay tuned.

I was thinking Cintron because of his shoulder, but this could just be if Buehrle can't go. I think Haeger would come out of the pen, and Masset would start.

Well, they're not going to send Cintron down. They might DL him, but I was unaware that injury was still bothering him. I also thought it was an elbow, not a shoulder.

I was thinking they'd send a tired bullpen pitcher down and bring up a fresh Haeger to get them through the weekend. Of course, Masset and Aardsma would probably qualify as "tired pitchers" at this point, but neither has done anything to merit a demotion. In fact, they have done a fine job so far.

I really hope this was a big momentum-builder. You definitely don't want to get swept at home to start a brand new season (not that you ever want to get swept, but you know what I mean). 1-2 looks a hell of a lot better than 0-3 and if the Sox can take at least 2 out of 3 against the Twins, I know I'll breathe a lot easier. :D:

Actually, now that I think about it, here's what we should do.

1. Pray that Javy gives us six or seven innings tomorrow.
2. If he doesn't, bring in Danks in relief.
3. If Danks has to pitch in relief tomorrow, send him down to Charlotte afterward and start Haeger against the Twins on Saturday.

Not really fair to Danks, but I think that's the best solution.

So we really need Javy and John to deliver, so that the pressure is off of Jose on Sunday. If we already win the first two, the third doesn't matter as much.

Granted, I have higher hopes for Javy to pitch a complete game over Jose being able to hang with Santana, but what the hey, its not like we'll be on the bottom of the division if we don't, right? (Looks at current standings.)

It would be nice to face Hi Ho Silva and Sidney Pontoon, but it might be nice for the Sox to pull what the Tigers did today and cancel the game tomorrow night for cold reasons. The BP is shot and they need to be ready to go multiple innings if Javy or Danks has issues.

I agree with this. Hafner is good, but he is not God. The strategy of walking Hafner blew up in our faces time and time again on Wednesday. Martinez KILLED US in that game. I believe he reached in all six plate appearances.

Today, we pitched more aggressively to those two hitters, and lo and behold, we got them out with regularity.

Nice try. :)

You're obviously missing the point. The original poster is projecting the Twins to go 157-2 over their remaining games, forcing a one game playoff for our 160th consecutive victory on October 1st, vaulting us into the playoffs with a record of 161-2.

(I know, if we wont all our remaining games, the Twins would obviously lose more than 2 more. It's in teal, get off my back)

Well, he is big enough to count. Maybe it'll take the game 2 days to finish because he needs the time to waddle on and off the mound?

Seriously - very nice game today (outside of Thornton's couple of ABs). Nice execution, outstanding relief pitching, especially by Masset. The kind of game you like to see your team win because you figure that's the kind of win that you'll eed to be able to get to make the postseason.

I'm still concerned about the starters, hopefully Javy & Danks come through tomorrow & Sat and they can pummel Silva/Ponson.

If the Sox want to promote Haeger, I would agree with the previous poster who suggested putting Pods on the DL to work on his speed on a rehab stint in Charlotte. Then, Erstad could slide over to left and lead off, and Anderson could start in CF.

Plus, it would give Ozzie an an opportuity to see what Mackowiak can do in CF.

Nice win.

There aren't many really good leadoff hitters in baseball; Pods is pretty good at it if he can steal. I agree that Pods without speed is marginal; but get on base guys are rare on this team. Rob M would be a better lead-off hitter than erstad or pretty much anyone else on this team except for Podsednik.

You gotta love a walkoff HBP. I didn't read much of the thread, but does anyone else think AJ bought that HBP? It didn't really look like the ball hit him, and it wasn't until after AJ pointed that he had been hit that the umpire made the call. I don't think it would have made much of a difference, because with the bases loaded, 0 out and a 2-0 count, we probably would have won the game anyway, but I thought it was funny to see AJ buy another call.

Great job by Masset saving the game for us today. :bandance:

:gulp: Here's to my buddy Doug for talking me into going to the game despite the dire weather predictions. Turned into a lovely day, especially the walk-off HBP.

Nobody wants to complain about Pods getting thrown out again by Martinez? He really picked up Uribe with that single to drive in our third run. But Masset was the hero, obviously. His curve is plain nasty, and so is his fastball when it's running in on righties or backing up to catch the inside corner on lefties. The homer by Michaels was actually on a good pitch, IMO.

Danks was warming up in the middle innings. Did anyone who watched TV or listened to radio hear whether he was just getting some work, or was Ozzie thinking about bringing him in? I suppose Contreras could have pitched the second game of the Twins series, if necessary. Glad we don't have to find out.

At one point, Sizemore had to bail away from a fastball that caught the plate for a strike. That's a sure sign -- as if the three homers weren't enough -- that he should've been brushed back. Something I just don't understand about Ozzie is that he apparently doesn't encourage pitchers to strike some fear into anyone who's really digging in against us.

Anyway, great to snag that first win! :bandance:

What has he done for me lately?

Well, he did have a big base hit today in the seventh inning, but his stolen-base percentage has taken a prodigious dip since the first half of '05. That's the reason for the concern. We can't have him giving away outs on the basepaths.

Good win. They easily could have packed it in --- already lost 2, cold weather, ace knocked out of the game with an injury, slow-tossing lefty for the opposition. But they didn't. I think this Sox team showed a lot of heart, and I'm proud of them. This bodes well for the rest of the year.

Yeah, as bad as the first two looked, The Sox were one miracle catch away from having a 2-1 record. Given that the Indians were absolutely on fire to open the season, that's a huge positive.

The Sox played tight just about the entire series, most likely due to the fact that Contreras kicked things off terribly. However, our boys grinded out a win and the confidence should return.

Our bullpen received a good trial by fire this series, and I feel that it'll do nothing but help later on. Masset received a beating in his first appearance, but really settled in yesterday. Aardsma, Sisco, Macdougal, and Thornton also got some innings, though Thornton has some work to do.

Bring on the Twins. My pick for breakout player of the year is pitching next, and I expect good things from him. Here's to Javy figuring out the 6th inning!:gulp:
